Scalabrine Reaches Agreement With Celtics 7th July, 2005 - 9:08 am North Jersey - In their chase for power forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, it looks like the New Jersey Nets have lost their own in Brian Scalabrine. Al Iannazzone from North Jersey is reporting that several league sources are confirming that Scalabrine reached an agreement in principle to play for the Boston Celtics .
"If that is the case, I have nothing but great things to say about him," Nets president Rod Thorn said. "He did a wonderful job for us, and I wish him nothing but the best. Brian's a terrific guy."
Scalabrine's new pact is a five-year, $15 million deal, the sources said. But according to the new collective bargaining agreement, teams can't sign free agents until July 22.
"If I go to another place, I am leaving on good terms with the fans and the New Jersey Nets organization," Scalabrine said. [READ]

Scalabrine is a garbage player, nothing more, nothing less. 15 mill over 5 years is actually the normal contract for a bench player. I would have preferred a shorter contract though. At least he gives himself a 110% each game.
Already using 3 mill on this guy plus a possible veteran big in a s&t for Walker really means that they plan on starting Big Al next season. Unless they want to use the combo of Raef & Blonut...

Decent back-up for Big Al and we know scalabrine gives you tons of effort on the court. $3 mil per isn't alot of money and it pretty much means Toine isn't coming back.
Let the Al Jefferson era begin!!!

there's also a rumor that Chicago is talking with Boston about a deal involving Walker & Davis. Since Davis makes a ton of money, another player will have to envolved. Blonut perhaps?
We would get another decent backup PF/C & loose the lenghty contract of Blonut. Not to mention that Davis will be in the last year of his contract, which will give us even more cap flexibility next year! I would love to make this happen. Especially since Davis & Scalabrini are both hustlers, don't demand a lot of minutes plus don't get in the way of the developpment of Big Al & Perk. AND we loose Blonut!

Well, its a little more than I would have liked to spend on Brini, but I think its a solid acquisition. I like the guy. Real tough, has a good sized body (6'9", 235 lbs), young (27 yrs old), can rebound when he's getting consistent playing time, can shoot the three's, good free throw shooter, plays with good energy and hustle, etc.
He's like a Raef who's more mobile and who doesn't mind rolling up his sleeves, getting physical and dirty (like most red heads ;D). A lunch pail type of guy.
Actually, he's also a fiestier Tom Gugliotta (whom I thought wasn't used enough by Rivers).

If this signing is true (we'll find out after the 22nd), will we still be able to grab Jasikevicius? Brini is said to be offered a 5 year, 15 million dolloar contract, which equates to 3 mil a year. With our MLE being around 5 mil, I think Brini's money cuts into what we were going to offer Saras.

i don't think we were going to offer Saras the full MLE. You don't pay a guy that has never played in the NBA 5 million a year, that's a huge gamble. He may be a star in Europe, but like all foreign players he'll need a full season to get accusted to the NBA style and the riggors of a full 82 game season. No way i'm offering someone like that 5 million a year.

People on other boards are complaining about the fact that he would make 3 mill a year. Newsflash, unless you come out of the NBDL or as a low profile player in Europe, nobody outside of rookie contracts earns less money. No "vet" who still plays in the league is going to play for less. Unless you have already retired ala Long & Mark Bryant.
Plus, if Walker wouls sign with a team like Atlanta, that has enough cap space, Ainge wouldn't be able to use him in a s&t. This would leave him with 5 million for a vet big & a vet pg. Good luck in pulling that off. With Scalabrini, we have already an insurance for when we can't use Walker.

-Scalabrini Signing
This was hard to believe at first. 5 years? Seems like a bit much. Maybe this idea that is is a done deal is premature. I never believe any signings until it is official.
As a player, Scalabrini hustles, is a crowd-favorite (ala Jerome Williams) because he leaves it all on the floor. He can shoot although his FG% does not reflect that. He would be a decent backup.
-Toine-Davis Trade Rumor
This I can definitely see. Both teams get to fill a need. If we can deal Blount somewhere, we could use Davis as a backup center. He would be a great vet to teach Perkins the ropes, and Big Al as well.
Free Agent Point Guard
I see Travis Best signing here, with Dan Dickau a dark horse. I see him as a poor man's Steve Nash. I have a feeling Ainge may try to sign him if we do not sign that Lithuanian guy.

I think Ainge feels that Brini can be one of these backups who will be a good fit with the young group. 5 years will allow him to have continuity with the young guys and allow Ainge to have a good backup without having to worry every year about finding another backup PF. Brini is a hard worker and he's a versatile big man. He's capable of hitting open shots and grabbing tough rebounds in traffic. Nothing special about him, but he is a quality backup. That's all we need since Jefferson is going to be playing in front of him.

From what some of the scouting reports say - he is a good 'team player'. That's what I like the most about him. He also can hit his FTs.

Mixed feelings w/ this potential signing. Solid back-up, but not quite the player I hoped Danny would sign in the off season.

He might be worth the look Runner. That's the nice thing about these summer games. The other nice thing - it gives us bball junkies a fix.

The C's wouldnt be the C's without a couple stiffs. Danny looks like he can do no wrong this offseason but his soft spot for this type of player rears its head to a fault this time. A small fault though. This signing doesnt make a whole lot of difference either way, although I think it may increase the likelyhood Antoine wont be back. Which if the case is a downgrade. Tommy will eat this up. A redhead? oh boy...... Antoine(if he will agree to a sign nd trade) plus blount to chicago for Antonio Davis is starting to make sense.. Is Davis and Scalabrine an upgrade over Blount and Walker?
