I'm not sure I see the wisdom of signing Smart to a bad deal. I guess I get that you need to have salaries match up in a trade, but wow it better work or you're stuck with him.
I think a ton of bad contracts will be coming back to haunt teams.
I also don't get why these teams bid against themselves

Offensively he's way better than Smart. Way better.

Offensively he's way better than Smart. Way better. He is overall a way better player than "not so" Smart is. I would love to resign him to be our starting PG once Brad signs whoever his target is (Beal). I am sure that is what they were discussing. Because can't we sign him to a longer deal without worrying about the cap after he plays here for a year? So he can either leave if it doesn't work out here to his liking, or he can get his best deal with us after the season, which should still be much cheaper than what they are offering "not so" Smart.

Its a good signing which at least keeps us competitive this season. I'd like to see how Schroeder handles being a floor general and if it works out, then we may have found our PG of the future. Give me Nesmith playing the Duncan Robinson-role, and then all we'll need is Time Lord to be consistently healthy. I like our chances if things all work out and we have this as our starting unit.
PG - Schroeder SG - Nesmith SF - Brown PF - Tatum C - Williams
And off the bench we'll have Smart, Pritchard and Richardson. We still need some big man depth but those 3 should provide some level of offense if any of the starters need to sit.

For what it's worth, Scal expressed some VERY strong support for Romeo during last night's broadcast. I'll paraphrase what he said as "Romeo's a stud, a total stud. He's could be great but he hasn't realized yet how hard he has to play in this league." That was the gist, even if the words are a little off.
I like that starting five, jrmzt. Nesmith had the game we've all been waiting for last night, scoring over 30 and shooting lights out. And Schroeder is a major upgrade over Smart offensively, so we're already better on that end than last year - even losing Fournier.
I'm curious where we're headed at PG as we now have Smart, Schroeder, Pritch, Kris Dunn, Yam and Carsen(although he's really a SG in a PG body). With Schroeder on board someone has to go, don't they? We could ask Yam to play abroad again - although he doesn't want to. Or we could move Dunn or Smart. Or both.

He can't handle the ball very well, doesn't have good vision or passing ability, and he is not a good shooter or finisher at the rim. He looks the part, but hasn't shown to be a competent player even in the summer league against guys who mostly will be in the G-League/two way contracts or playing overseas. If he can't stand out against these guys, then how is he supposed to make it in the NBA?

All good points. I am assuming Scal has seen stuff we haven't, presumably in intrasquad scrimmages. I can't argue with you though based on what we all have seen.

Both 5 star recruits. But that raw athleticism never translated. Similar shooting motion...heck don't look now but a similar hairstyle too...

So, we didn't lose Fournier for nothing. Got a 17 mil TPE for him from the Knicks in exchange for some protected picks (goes to show you that Brad is not too fond of a tsunami of rookies every year.

Not as I understand it. I don't think you can combine the 17 mil TPE with other players' salaries to match Beal's 34 mil this season. Nor can you do combine them in a sign and trade next summer. The only way we can get Beal without losing Brown or Tatum, is to trade Smart and others - although I guess Horford would work if they were willing to take him. At least that's my understanding.

Horford will be an expiring contract next year, so that will be his value in a trade.

Horford will be an expiring contract next year, so that will be his value in a trade. I think if we will take on a contract they want to get rid of (Davis Bertans), and give them some assets (young players and draft picks), the Wiz will work with us on a trade for Beal. Smart and Horford + assets for Beal, and the TPE for Bertans.
