Smart may have more value to a team in need of someone who brings a winning attitude, but there is NO WAY we pay Smart $17 million per year or more. That would be exactly the type of mistake that Danny has avoided, using up cap space on mediocre players. Save the big money for stars.

That rumor that SAC maybe offering a proposal sounds odd. SAC already has Fox at the PG, and Hield at the SG. Big money for a sixth man?

I've now read that the rumor is not accurate (per a Sacramento beat writer), so who knows what is going to happen.

Did Danny really offer Smart a 4-year contract greater than $11m in October? I read that rumor recently too.

Even if that were true, it doesn't mean Danny would make the same offer today. Back in October we didn't know several things: how good Tatum would be. How much Jaylen would improve. Same with TR3.

I'm beginning to think the hand thing really bothered the Celts more than they let on. Ever notice how under Brad anyone that gets out of line even a little ends up gone? Sully. Rondo. IT. Now Smart. And before that Ainge dealt with Big Baby, Delonte, and Ray back in the day. Even a guy or two who really improved had to get paid somewhere else. Like KO.
I wonder if the Celts know something we don't know.

The Celts have kind of become a place for only 3 kinds of players....stars totally doing their jobs (like Al or Tatum). If you're a former star not doing your job you go to the Nets. Right Pierce? Another kind of player is a cheap as heck one with a lot to prove. Like Evan Turner or Shane Larkin or Theis. Another kind of player is a guy on a rookie deal.
Not a lot of role players. Baynes. Baynes is the role player at a mid level. And that's practically it.
There are no non stars that got paid and stuck around. That doesn't happen here.

Right, and that's exactly why I don't see Smart getting paid by the Celtics. Danny has avoided paying for mediocrity, and as much as people love his defense and his intensity, Smart is a mediocre one way player.

Smart still doesn't have an offer from anyone (other than the QO from Boston) two weeks into free agency. I wonder how much of this is due to the perception that the Celtics would match any offer. My bet at this point is that he's with the Celtics on a one year deal and will test unrestricted free agency next summer.

It's a good idea for Smart to wait at the moment because people can get hurt and arrested. Granted he's as likely as anyone for either or both of those things, but still.
If I were his agent I'd tell him to bet on himself and just do the one year thing. If he manages to raise his shooting percentages to just merely bad he could easily cash in.
I'd tell him "This is the plan....become a better shooter. Go to the finals. Lock down Steph Curry. Get paid."

I'd bet on Step 2. Not so much the rest.

Eja, I liked your posts (2). A lot of good thoughts.
A few comments.
1. If the rumor deal, was 4-years = $44m, I agree Danny does not offer that now. The market clearly dictated that no other team values Smart that high or they would have offered a contract.
2. I think BOS would have signed KO, if Hayward were not coming. Hayward is a clear upgrade.
3. Danny has selected a lot of talented players with character questions. Tony Allen could not play in CHI in fear of a gangster hit.
4. Players are expendable if your average. Max contracts are like an all or nothing, and players in between usually move on.

Reports on various outlets now indicate that the Celtics and Smart are talking about a 4 year deal for about $12 million per year.
