At 6 p.m. ET on Monday, Griffin was on the phone assessing Jimmy Butler’s desire to play with LeBron James and the Cavs, according to two people with direct knowledge of the calls. They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the conversations.
By 7:30 p.m. ET, Griffin and the Cavs had parted ways, and the Cavs will not bring back senior vice president of basketball operations Trent Redden, leaving the front office in chaos days before the draft and less than two weeks from the start of free agency.

So wait, I'm still not sure what happened. Griffin wanted to find out if Butler was interested in playing for CLE, and somehow or other, Griffin and CLE parted ways because of that? So Griffin wanted Butler to come, but the other staff members didn't? Am I on the right track so far?

Who knows. From the reports, Griffin was on the phones trying to make a PG or Butler trade and trying to get a 3rd team involved right up until they told him he was out as GM. The only explanation I saw so far was that they couldn't agree on the future. Who knows what that means.

Apparently now Butler wants to go to Cleveland.

The Chicago Bulls guard has welcomed recent overtures from Cavs players, including LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, and will urge the Bulls to trade him to the Eastern Conference champions, The Chicago Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley reported Tuesday, citing multiple sources in Cleveland. Butler had previously told Chicago he didn’t want to be traded, but discreet conversations with Cavs players have changed his attitude toward leaving Chicago after six years with the team.

ESPN’s Mark Stein reported Tuesday the Cavs are working on a three-team deal to facilitate Butler’s acquisition, citing NBA sources. David Griffin’s firing as Cleveland general manager Monday hasn’t stopped the team from considering several scenarios, many of which involving trading forward Kevin Love.

According to CSN Chicago, the Bulls are shopping Butler to many teams, including the Celtics. Other teams interested are the Cavs, Suns and Nuggets. The report went on to say the Celtics even offered the Bulls the No. 3 overall pick for Butler straight up, but were turned down.
The report also has one league executive saying "it's either Boston or Cleveland but he's going."

The Cavs are reportedly seeking a 3rd team with assets to give to Chicago for Butler in exchange for Love, who Chicago doesn't want. Hopefully no teams will want to help the Cavs get even better. Especially Eastern teams should balk at it.

I'm so worn out thinking about how our roster would look with player X, or who we should draft, etc. I can't even get a clear reading if I'd want Butler or not. I guess it all depends on who else we're adding to this team.

I'd prefer Porzingis over Butler, I think.

On Tuesday, during an appearance on a Utah radio show, Tanner Ainge was asked whether he could work to convince his father not to sign Hayward away from the Jazz. "Unfortunately, I'm not sure I have a lot of influence there," Ainge said. "Ultimately, Gordon is going to make the decision. I hope he stays." Got to wonder if his opponents will use that against him in the race.
