Celtics player arrested in W. Loop brawl
Boston Celtics guard and former Crane High School star Tony Allen was arrested Wednesday and was expected to spend the night in jail while prosecutors considered criminal charges against him, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.
The charges -- stemming from a West Loop brawl this past summer -- could come down as soon as today.
Allen's attorney, Michael Zaslavsky, brought Allen, 23, into Area 4 Police Headquarters to answer questions relating to a shooting and brawl that occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 28 at the White Palace Grill in the West Loop.
Allen isn't considered a suspect in the shooting of Marktwain Johnson, 29, who was wounded in the left arm and left side. But Johnson and Nigel Odum, 24, have filed a civil lawsuit against Allen. Odum claims Allen punched him and fractured his left eye socket just before another man who was part of Allen's group opened fire on Johnson.
"[Allen] came in with his attorney, and he is under arrest pending charges," said a law enforcement source.
Several Chicago Police detectives attended the Celtics game against the Bulls at the United Center on Saturday, but Allen had not made the trip because he's recovering from surgery on his right knee. The Bulls played the Celtics again Wednesday in Boston.
"I cannot comment, because there is an ongoing investigation," Zaslavsky said. "And at the present time no charges have been filed against Mr. Allen."
Johnson and Odum claim Allen instigated the altercation at the restaurant. All three apparently were at a party earlier in the evening for Celtics guard Will Bynum, who also attended Crane. Several partygoers went to the grill after the party. Allen entered with a large entourage and recognized Johnson, with whom he had a previous disagreement, according to the lawsuit.
Allen tapped the shooter on the chest and said, "F - - - him up," after which the fight and shooting ensued, the lawsuit alleges.
"It's all on tape," said Rahsaan Gordon, the lawyer for Johnson and Odum. "Tony Allen struck my client unprovoked."
The shooter still is not in custody, authorities said.
Allen, at 6 feet 4 inches tall and 213 pounds, averaged 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game as a rookie last season with the Celtics.
if it is so then i'm majorly disappointed!!!!!!!!!
