Ill lean Ossric's way and say that Im slightly agains the Dickeau signing. That is, if he's making 3-4 million dollars a year over several years. If he signed a 1-2 deal, Im fine with it. But Ive always said that Id prefer a older vet for one year that wouldnt play many minutes. DA can always package him in a trade, in a couple years, if needed. That is, if he has a longer contract.

Does anyone know what kind of contract Dickau is going to receive if he signs with the Celtics?
I can't see him getting a mark blount contract so I doubt I'll regret it if Dickau turns out to be nothing more than a career back-up. If anything we're getting a solid pg for very little money. And competition doesn't hurt at all especially at PG.

Until it happens otherwise, I'm assuming that Dickau would be a veteran, "stabilizing" backup---getting around 16-20 mpg.

It's funny that this rumor appeared today in the herald that the Celts were on the verge of signing Dickau, cuz I had been hoping for the last few weeks that they would at least take a look at the guy.
If we do sign him, it will be a good move. He will not get us over the top or anything, but he will definitely help us get closer.
If we do sign him, I do expect him to be starting and playing decent minutes with Delonte backing him up, Banks either getting traded, or playing limited minutes, with Greene and Bynum in the NBDL.
This guy is not a superstar, but like Veal he has B-ball IQ, and can shoot. He's no Stockton, but he is a better shooter. This guy has the ability to light it up, but he is not selfish. He will get open looks for Paul, Big Al, raef, Ricky, everyone, and he can hit the open jumper when left open.
He is a team player who can pass the basketball. He had a game last year where he dished out 16 assists on New Orleans where they had practically nobody.
If we do sign him, and play him decent minutes i can see him averaging 9 or 10 points and 7 assists per game.

Doc will want to start Dickau over West just due to him being a little more seasoned plus he never got hurt. West has so West may be a liability to be a starter at this point.

I would say Banks gets moved, if we bring on Dickau. I would guess West opens camp as #1 PG w/ DD a close 2nd fighting for the lead. That would leave Greene and Bynum (if he makes the team). My bet is on Bynum playing in the NBDL and Greene being in the NBA where DA can can keep close tabs on him.

Yea, I can see it ghoing either way with Bynum going to the NBDL or making the team or green going to the NBDL or making the team. Banks I would say is most likely gone though. Especially after hearing he wanted Ricky to play point and didn't want to do pg duties.

Well, look at this scenario:
--Delonte West and Dan Dickau seem to resemble each other--second tier athletes, who are said to be smart players (Delonte appears to be, but I'm not sure about Dickau), who can shoot the ball
--Marcus Banks and Will Bynum are cut from the same mold. Both are shorter players who play suffocating defense, who are sparkplug scorers. Marcus' confidence comes and goes, while Bynum's is pretty secure. Banks is longer and leaner (though he is broad shouldered), while Bynum is stockier and powerful in the upper body.
--And then there's Orien Greene, who we know little about, but could end up being the dark horse PG who comes out on top because of his tall stature, his defensive abilities, and his pass first mentality.
Will our PG situation be determined by pitting Delonte vs. Dickau and Banks vs. Bynum? Just trying to stir things up during the slow period ;D

personally i think there's a reason why banks was 13th pick and bynum went undrafted

I don't see a problem with this signing, since all we have left is about half our MLE, so it wouldn't be a big contract. Dan D. had a good stretch of games with New Orleans, and I did not see any obviously better players on espn's list of available free agents, so it's not like we passed on an all-star to sign him. I'm not sure any 30+ year old PGs were looking to sign with us, given how the perception with all our young talent and trading Walker is that we are building for the future. For example, Kenny Anderson per espn signed with Houston, who only has the minimum exception of $1.6 million to offer and apparently had been offered more by other teams. Houston is closer to being a contender than most teams, and most older PGs are looking for that "final shot." Since we lacked an established starter, the next best thing IMO is to gather as many less-established but talented candidates as possible. The more people competing the greater the odds of finding one who can play well enough to start in the NBA. I read on the Boston Globe that Ainge has watched Dickau closely and really liked what he saw from him in New Orleans this past year. With Ainges track record in evaluating young talent, I'm definitely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I would have liked Earl Watson, but I can't dispute Ainge since I never had a chance to see Dickau in New Orleans this year, and Ainge spoke highly of him. www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2005/08/21/walkers_deal_got_doctored_a_little/I thought Ainge made an interesting comment about competition for the PG spot without politics. Simply whoever plays the best will get the minutes.

I don't. If Ainge could do the '03 draft over again and redo the selection based on what he knows now, I can almost guarantee he would not draft Banks, seeing how Luke Ridnour was the very next pick.
Banks is not the shooter Ainge likes (sort of the gripe he had against Payton), nor does he show consistent passing ability.
Lot of good players dropped out of the draft this year. I mean, when a guy of Ryan Gomes' caliber drops to the 50th pick, you know that something is grossly wrong (but it worked in our favor).
Banks has a lot more athletic abilities than Bynum does, but Bynum could make himself more valuable by being a more productive bench player.

i think dickau, banks, west will be our rotation, greene will be in nbdl. bynum may get to nbdl but more likely will end up being cut
