Getting a prized big man is every team's dream, but not every team will get their dream answered. We were totally blessed to nab Al Jefferson in '04 and he's developing rather quickly and should turn out to be our stud post scorer and monster rebounder and defender. But he can't do it alone. He's going to need a partner in the trenches to take some pressure off of him.
Our focus on this year's draft should be to get ourselves a Center who has more potential than Perkins. I view Perkins as our future backup C/PF whose specialty is his enforcing defense and bruising style of play. So if he's our backup, our future starting C is going to have to be better than him.
We know that our interior defense is lacking when Blount and Raef are on the court, so to get better we are going to need a stronger defensive presence. And we know that the guy has to have some scoring ability because that's a big part of how the offense runs (partially the reason why Perkins doesn't get as much playing time).
So who fits into these traits?
Probably at the top of the list is Tiago Splitter. This kid has a rugged body, he's a solid defender, and he's got offense. BCHistorian, one of the few guys who has actually seen him play, thinks he's the real deal, so that just boosts my endorsment for this kid even more. Getting him and placing him next to Jefferson puts a huge smile on my face.
Shelden Williams is another guy I think may have a chance to be better than Perkins, but like Kendrick, his offense isn't top notch. I like the kid, but I don't think he'll beat Perkins outright for the starting job. But he'll be a marked improvement defensively over both Blount and Raef, not to mention being a much stronger rebounder.
We have a 1st round pick coming from Cleveland in '07, the same year that Greg Oden is eligible for the NBA. Maybe Ainge can swing a deal which includes this pick and get us Oden.
Or try and steal Andrew Bogut away from Milwaukee ;D
At any rate, getting to the next level lies heavily in our ability to get stronger up the middle--offensively and defensively. Ainge needs to work his Midas touch and get us a difference maker.
