JB, Perk should be the starter because he's young and on the verge of making his mark in the NBA. Plus he plays a lot tougher and he's a lot more rugged than Theo, and an imposing physical presence is what we've been missing.
But Doc often throws curveballs and it wouldn't shock me if he decides to go with Ratliff in the starting rotation (though he's likely to insert Perkins at the first substitution).

I like the idea of Theo off the bench and Perk starting. If Mt Perk gets into foul trouble we have a solid vet to fill the void.

Yeah, that would be the ideal roll of the dice. Perkins really came on at the end of last season. His agility and quckness have really improved since his rookie season. My desire for Perk is for him to really use his body as a weapon and use it to clear space in the paint for rebounds. I want him to drive guys back so that he has the inside positioning on rebounds. Really seal off his man on his behind and keep them from getting a chance to get their paws on loose balls.

Think about Perk and Rat in the game together against bigger frontlines. Then bring in the speed to wear down the other team, with or bigs on the bench.

Ratliff should be preserved (as Wally) for the ends of games. Let Gomes and Perkins start and if they falter go with the vets. I predict that Olowokandi, (even, loafing, he gives us more than Jones or Pittsnoggle) gets the last roster spot which gives us some veteran depth at center, allowibng Ratliff to play more at the four and latting Gomes move to the three where he belongs. I love having veterans off the bench. Wally, Ratliff, Olo, West and Allen make a nice second unit, no?

I think Perk should start and get at least 25-30 minutes at Center. Ratliff should come off the bench and play around 20 minutes to prolong his career and season. We will have a 3rd Center for sure to back up these two, whether Kandi, Jones, or Pitts who can fill in at the 5 in case of foul trouble or injury. I also expect to see Al playing center when Doc goes to small ball.

I can't wait to see what Jones can do for us, having a a full camp with the team.

Early hint of the possible starting lineup Rivers is looking at is: Theo, Gomes, Wally, Pierce, and Telfair. We know this because this is the lineup he put together in practice early in training camp.
This is just a rough sketch, a feeler, and there are bound to be a lot more lineups he'll tinker with before Nov 1st.

Another lineup Doc experimented with is Telfair and Rajon in the backcourt, Pierce and Wally at the forward spots, and Theo manning the middle.
I think Doc is seriously thinking about using a 2 PG attack, especially since these 2 PG's are lightning quick and can penetrate into the paint aggressively.
But putting Wally at PF? Interesting. He's quite strong and could possibly physically handle guys like Drew Gooden (though he'll give up a couple of inches). And he'll be able to pull Gooden away from the middle because Wally is a dangerous shooter. But we're at a disadvantage on the boards with Wally at the 4.

The more I think about it, the less I think that lineup will be able to handle a lot of minutes against good teams (especially good teams). Theo, Gomes, Pierce, Wally and Telfair.
For one, where is our rebounding and defensive pressure going to come from? I mean, this was one of the major things we need to improve, our rebounding and defense. By putting out out this lineup, we don't improve those aspects.
Secondly, if we are supposed to be a faster tempo team, this is not the squad to put out. Neither Gomes, Pierce or Wally are known as burners on the court.
This may be a smart halfcourt starting 5, but it does nothing for our rebounding/defense nor our uptempo game.
Back to the drawing board, Doc.

I agree that this starting 5 doesn't seem like a running team. We need to mix the vets between the starters and the bench and not try to cram all the vets into the starting 5. I think that the players who start at the end of the season will be much different than those who start to begin the season.

Lets just hope Doc isn't hard headed about it and stick with a lineup that isn't allowing us to fully play to our capabilities.
