ROANOKE, Va., Jan. 26 -- The NBA Development League’s leading scorer, Will Bynum, poured in a game-high 29 points to lead the Roanoke Dazzle to a 116-113 victory over the Fayetteville Patriots.
The Dazzle entered the contest with three of the top 10 scorers in the D-League with Bynum, Anthony Grundy and Isiah Victor, who rank first, second and eighth, respectively. The “Big Three” led six Dazzle players in double figures: Bynum finished with 29, Grundy had 26, Victor added 18, Seth Doliboa had 12, Kevin Owens had his second straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Bryant Matthews chipped in with 11 as well.
The Dazzle roared out of the gates, building a lead that reached as many as 21 points in the second quarter. This lead would not last as the Patriots scratched and clawed their way back into the contest, eventually taking a one-point lead in the third quarter. The Dazzle regained the lead seconds later, and would not relinquish it the rest of the game.
“That’s pro basketball,” said Dazzle head coach Kent Davison. “There are good players on that other team and they started doing the things they needed to do to get back into the game. I was really proud of our guys, we were able to hang on and build the lead back. It says a lot about the heart of our guys.”
For the Patriots, the game was a story of turnovers. They committed 25 for the game, the most costly coming with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter. With Fayetteville down three, Bryant Matthews was able to pick Mike King’s pocket to seal the win for the Dazzle.
“We have to handle the ball better. We had 25 turnovers, we can’t win doing that,” said Patriots head coach Mike Brown adding that he was pleased with his team’s effort to get back into the game. “Our guys really fought back, we were able to get over that hump and get going a little bit.”
For the game the Patriots had six players score in double figures, led by Boston Celtics assignee Gerald Green with 21. Joining Green in double figures was Erik Daniels with 18, Ryan Randle with 14, Sharrod Ford and Norm Richardson with 11 each and King with 10.
With the win, the Dazzle improve to 11-13 on the season. With the loss, the Patriots drop to 5-16 on the season. The teams meet in a rematch Saturday at the Roanoke Civic Center, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. ET. It will be the fifth meeting between the two teams in the month of January.
