another article: www.nba.com/celtics/news/green_update011806.html"His athleticism was on display, he had a ri-diculous double-clutch dunk in the game Sunday," said Ainge. "He played well. His one-on-one offense and defense is top-notch. He primarily needs to improve off the ball, but he's shown improvement since the start of the summer league in the offseason."

Dunking is what bad players who can't shoot do

Ah, but lucky for us, he's got a good shooting stroke. That's why a lot of us are high on him.

yep. I agree. And maybe someday he'll be able to play defense too.

Yeah, hopefully.
I think our future backcourt is shaping out to be Delonte and Tony Allen, two excellent team players and defenders. Having Gerald at SF will give us a really athletic backcourt/wing trio, so hopefully he'll become a complete player by adding some defense.

Will Gerald Green replace Paul Pierce in the starting lineup next year?

I don't think it'll be next year, but ultimately, I believe Green will force Pierce out of Boston.

There are like 3 guards in the league that could force PP from the starting lineup and none of them are on the Celts.

Just watched Gerald's first game. At times he looked completely lost on defense and isn't very good moving without the ball. But he has a really sweet stroke and is very athletic. You can see that he has potential but really has to work on defense and also get a little stronger because he seemed to get pushed around a bit. But this was his first game, so maybe some of it was just jitters. He does look excited to be there. When he was on the bench and a time out was called he was up and high fiving everyone as they came off the floor.

Defense is usually the last thing to develop because until you reach the NBA, you don't really have that part down. But having a sweet jumper and freakish athleticism is a good foundation to build on.

I have never understood why defense is supposedly so hard for these young players to get. Derren explain to us what is to get. It's not rocket science.
Force your man to go to his left unless he is lefty in which case force him right.
Fore guys to the middle.
Don't give away baseline
Challenge every shot and get a hand in a guy's face when he shoots
Pressure the ball.
Occassionally take a calculated risk.
Give more space to a guy that can't shoot.
Get in passing lanes.
Keep track of your fouls
Box out
Call out picks
Try not to get picked
Occassionally trap a guy
Switch off to help out
Look for the mismatches
What is so hard about all that? I have never figured out what is so hard about defense for world class athletes. My only theory is way too much And 1 and Streetball have influeneced the league so the league is very young, stupid, and lazy at times and with a simple thing like defense which is how a much shorter guy like Wallace or Artest or Rodman can make these guys look ridiculous cause that's what you are if you don't play D.

In the NBA, more than being an individual defender, you'll need to grasp the team defensive strategies, and that's the part that's hard for everyone to grasp initially.

They sure don't have a hard time grasping offensive strategies. I would assume if you have 4 years of playing for a coach like coach K then maybe defense isn't that hard, (I don't recall people saying Battier or Duhon or Brand or jay Williams just didnt get defense) but when you don't want to play for him for 4 minutes maybe it's harder to grasp

I think if GG keeps his size/weight down he would make for a nice 2 or 3. I wan't him as a 2 first, as he grows into added muscle, a 3. If PP can teach him how to get to the line ---- that would be cool.
Educate a future replacment, like the Celts of the 1960's did under Red...
