Irving thrilled w/ joining Celtics and they'll have great chance to eventually re-sign him. Boston made deal with strong belief he'll stay.

WOW! One reason IMO behind this trade - Kyrie 3 years younger, right now healthier, and is under contract for longer. He will cost more this year, but next year is signed for 20 mil instead of the roughly 30 mil IT is thinking about demanding. Younger, better contract, and Championship tested - has had big games in the finals, and at times DESTROYED us last year (esp. 3rd quarter of game 4).
I don't like giving up the Nets pick, but even with the worse record, only 25% chance at being [HASH]1, maybe with Russell Ainge thinks they will be better this year. HATE giving up IT, if nothing else for his heart and personality. BIG locker-room loss - I can only presume that AInge felt, long term, with Brown and Tatum and the Lakers/Kings pick in tow Kyrie has more time to grow with the young nucleus of the future.
Crowder I liked, but we have no shortage of wings. Zizic has some promise, but raw and in some ways still a project.
I have mixed feelings about this trade -- maybe ultimately Ainge feels Stevens can get Kyrie to play some defense, and he does have 5" over IT so "potentially" may not be as bad a defensive liability as IT. But I will miss Bradley and IT a great deal!! I will give the trade a chance because of how incredible Kyrie is at times, and he does have that championship swagger, whereas despite some big games in this year's playoffs, IT has struggled at times in the playoffs a well. Keeping my fingers crossed that at only age 25 Kyrie has not hit his ceiling yet - maybe he has an Isaiah-like jump in the next couple of years

People think Kyrie is a ball hog, and he didn't give people much reason to think otherwise.
But think about this -- Kyrie chose to play for coach K. He's also listed coach Brad and Pop as coaches he wants to play for. Kyrie wants to play for them because he knows they'll lead him to succeed. More than individual accolades, he wants to win.

I like the trade. Hate to see Crowder go but Brown might be a nice fit for his minutes.

Losing Crowder is a non-issue for me. IT was a great story but I was never convinced that he could be the lead player on a title team. And I wasn't wild about giving him the max deal he will command. Zizic looked serviceable but not special this summer. Trading the Nets' pick is where the big risk is, I think. The traditional wisdom in the NBA is that whoever gets the best player in a trade wins the trade. Let's hope Kyrie is better than whoever the Nets pick turns into.
So with the Lakers/Kings pick still out there in the future, we move forward with Irving, Hayward, Brown, Tatum, Horford as the core. Pretty damn impressive rebuild in a very short time.
To me the main task now is to add some size up front. With Zizic gone we are pretty thin there now.

From Danny's Conference call:
"This deal we made today was not available a month ago." Ainge.
"It is a high pricetag, a lot to give up. But acquiring a 25-YO perennial all-star fits our timeline, have to pay a heavy price." Ainge
To get one of the best offensive players in the league (in Kyrie Irving) you have to pay a heavy price.
"very, very difficult day" trading IT and Crowder, but he's excited about acquiring Irving.
Danny Ainge says he isn’t going to share his conversation with Isaiah. Says it was difficult.
[HASH]Celtics Danny Ainge: I will leave it to your own imaginations to think about how difficult this conversation was for me & Isaiah.
"It's big for our franchise." Ainge.
Ainge on trading with rival Cavs: “This is a trade that can make us better and that’s why we did it."
Up to 8 times Danny Ainge has now referenced Kyrie Irving's age - 25
"We have a player that has been proven to be a sure thing. You do pay a heavy price." Ainge.
Danny Ainge said Isaiah Thomas' hip injury played "some" role in the trade, added that IT may be delayed to start the season.
Ainge: We've done a lot of homework and we feel comfortable with who Kyrie is and can be. His best basketball is ahead of him.
Danny Ainge: We value that Brooklyn pick. We've valued it from the time we got it. Obviously, we value Kyrie Irving more.
Ainge refused to comment on whether he expects Kyrie to remain in Boston after current contract runs out. He has player option for 2019-20.
"I won't comment on any things in the future. Deal with it when time comes." Ainge on Kyrie potentially signing longterm.
Danny Ainge hints there might be a “delay” for Isaiah Thomas starting the season but believes he’ll ultimately be fine after hip injury.
Danny Ainge: Trading both guys was tough. But Isaiah had just an amazing season this year. ... Everybody fell in love with him.
"Those are private conversations. You can imagine how difficult it was. I will say Kyrie was very excited about coming to the Celtics." DA
Ainge said Kyrie is excited, but he doesn't want to say how IT took the trade. He must not have liked it.
Ainge wrapped up with a tease: "Let's wait and see what else happens. We never know."

Steve, aka Celtic17, great to see you posting. We are well over due for a phone call. OK, now for business. This trade is Antoine Walker like, a shocker! Irving, and IT are a draw, sans the age difference (which is big). Crowder, I am OK letting go, because Brown and Tatum are in the wings. Zizic, slightly disappointed, however replaceable. The Nets pick is a wild card.

This trade is tough. I love swapping IT4/Crowder for Kyrie, but man, giving up that BRK [HASH]1 is a gamble. We'll see how it turns out. If it's outside of the top 5 it was totally worth it. If it lands top 5 . . . I definitely think Kyrie is a step up from IT4. Especially on the defensive end. I know you can throw all sorts of sabr states that say IT4 is a better defender than Kyrie. Trouble is, those are regular season numbers. The playoffs are a different animal. In a seven game series the opposing coach has all sorts of time to game plan different ways to attack your weak link, and in our case, having a PG that is sometimes half a foot shorter than the opposing PG is a huge weak link. Check out this article by basketball wizard Zach Lowe www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/19243080/zach-lowe-boston-celtics-hiding-isaiah-thomas-vs-chicago-bulls-nbaSay what you want about Kyrie, but opposing teams were never building game plans around his poor D. Coach Stevens and co. had to put all their brainpower together to find ways to hide IT4 on defense. You get a more traditional PG out there, one the other team can't consistantly take advantage of, and you are free to try a lot more things on defense. Double teams, zones, etc. And I've been going on for years about not wanting to commit big money to IT4. I don't want to be paying a 5'9" PG with a wonky hip 25+ mill a year into his 30s. And while teams aren't as flush with cash as they have been in previous, I guarantee there is some team out there that will give him a max or near max deal. I love crowder, but I think Marcus Morris provides a similar skill set. I would bet dollars to donuts that DA is trying to find a way to flip Al Horford and some other assets in order to get a better, younger big. Sweet Jesus, if we could somehow get Anthony Davis. Kyrie Jaylen Hayward Tatum Davis With a bench of: Rozier, Smart, Morris, Yabu, Baynes That team rivals GS and it's a lot younger too. The future is nigh, ladies and gentlemen.

It's reported that rather than trading away the Brooklyn pick, he could have instead given CLE the LA/SAC pick OR Jayson Tatum.
Of those 3 choices, he gave up the BRK pick (and knowing how shrewd Danny is, he must feel that pick is the least likely to bring back the highest reward).
He really likes Tatum, we know that. Now we know also that he sees the LA/SAC pick potentially being the more valuable asset.

The hardest part for me is not losing the BRK pick, not losing Zizic, and not even losing Crowder or IT. My heart breaks thinking about how devastated IT must be to leave Boston -- you could tell he really found a home, and acceptance here. To take that away from him must be extremely difficult.
Ainge said it was a diificult phone call, and wouldn't specify what was said
