The Celtics now have 18 partially fully guaranteed contracts on the team. Barring any 2 or 3 for 1 trades, at least 3 have to go and that leaves 5 players fighting for the final 2 spots on the team.
Which of the 5 get to stay?
John Holland - signed a 2 year 883,000 non guaranteed contract last season. Haven't seen much of him, even in Summer League. He's 6'5" with an NBA body and can play both SG and SF.
James Young - Entering his 2rd year with the Celtics hasn't shown much improvement and has yet to contribute anything meaningful to the team. Just doesn't seem to get it.
RJ Hunter - Hunter was drafted mostly for his shooting prowess but in his first season, he hit just 36% from the field and 30% from beyond the arc. He has shown some good instincts on defense and good decision making. He has good length but needs to put on some muscle since he gets pushed around a lot.
Ben Bentil - Bentil signed a 2.5 million 3 year contract but only 250,000 is guaranteed. He can hit the 3 and also is very physical inside. He can play the 4 or in small ball, the 5.
Demetrius Jackson - the 6'1" point guard signed a 5.474 million contract with the first year guaranteed at 1.45 million. He is strong, plays tough on both ends. He has good lateral quickness, is a good shooter, and tough defender. He's a bit rough but has a lot of potential. He was considered a mid 1st round pick and slipped to the Celtics in the second round. He could be a steal if he develops like most think he will.

I think it's time to cut ties with James Young. He's had 2 years to improve and just hasn't done so. Yes, he's still only 20 but you would expect some growth and he just doesn't seem to get it.
John Holland is non guaranteed and hasn't shown a whole lot in his time with the Celtics and so if it comes down to it, he gets cut, if nothing else because his contract is not guaranteed.
Ben Bentil - Bentil might stay if they make a 2 for 1 trade. He has some intriguing skills and could contribute if needed. His physicality in the paint is something the team could use. But if no trade, Bentil could at least start the season with the Red Claws.
I see Jackson and Hunter sticking. Of course, if there's a trade, all this is just an exercise in futility.

I see things the same way. I'm going to read into Jackson's contract that they expect to keep him. Hunter has a skill they need.
Did I miss something about Nader? Has he agreed to play in the NBDL or overseas?

The contract they gave Demetrius tells me they like him already.
I hope something is done with Nader; either they're going to try and make room on the roster to sign him, or get him to agree to play the D-League this season so we can keep his rights.

I liked him in Summer League and hope that they keep him around even if they stash him for a year.

To be different I chose only bentil based on my choice not a prognostication of what will happen.

Presumably they cut him and he becomes a FA. Maybe he signs on with the Red Claws.
Or maybe he and Young are traded.

I'm surprised he wouldn't go to Europe like Colton Iverson. He has to be realistic. The team has Crowder, Jaylen, and Gerald Green ahead of him. He should probably wait till September 9 and pray 4 guys get hurt (won't happen) and then make his move.

I really liked Nader's play in Summer League. I thought he completely outplayed Young and for the most part, Hunter too. i hope they keep his rights no matter where he plays this season. He's definitely got talent.

I'd definitely like to keep him over James Young.
This just is another reason why Ainge has to do something about our crowded roster. We can't just let a guy like Nader go because we are cluttered at the backend with too many fringe players. Maybe Nader is a fringe player too -- but I'd like to give him a couple of years to see what we have in him.
