One thing I like is that if we draft a guy like Bender, Jaylen, or Jamal we can afford to wait two years for them to develop because we still have a very young team that is on the rise. That's our advantage. Our team is on the rise, but is still one of the youngest.
It wouldn't shock me if we take steps back this year. If Jonas, Sully, and maybe Amir and Evan T and maybe Zeller don't come back then losing those vets could definitely make us take a step back, but I don't think by the end of the year that step would be tremendously far because young guys will keep getting better. I am very excited about the idea of Jordan Mickey taking some vet minutes. I think maybe an RJ or even Smart can help take some of ETs minutes.
One big concern I have is we draft someone like Jamal Murray and on his first day T Rozier just kills him, and then he goes up against Smart and is just absolutely traumatized and has to play in the D League all year and just never gets going.
This pick has to be an impact guy or at least a decent guy at a position of need. Like if Bender gets 14 minutes a game that's fine as long as he keeps getting better.
If there's no Sully we need Bender. If there's no ET we need Jaylen. I think Hield and maybe Dunn are ready for this emotionally and mentally.
If we lose ET I think we have to play Smart at sf if we draft a guard and that could work out.
I think this is a really hard decision

I'm getting to the point I hope Ainge trades back to the 5th or 6th pick and gets himself like either Chriss, or Hield or Jaylen and a distant future unprotected pick. Even if Bender slipped....well then you still get Bender, but 6th instead of 3rd and pick up something. I think 3rd is a really really tough place to be this year. You really really gotta nail it but I don't think there's a nail it guy.

Sort of getting the feeling like there's going to be Damian Lillard, Steph Curry, Paul George, Paul Pierce, Jimmu Butler types of players in this draft -- star players who weren't picked at the top of their draft class.
Lucky for us, we have 3 first round picks to try and strike gold.

Haha! By the power and lure of the draft, it has sparked forth life in what was once a corpse.
I see Esco has chimed in too!

I too worry the 3rd pick could be a curse... but if the right trade isn't out there, and you can't make a double move like with KG and RA, is trading to only get a little better right now worth it? I don't think so. I'm for package deals to get Okafor, Butler, and of course KD, but i don't see those happening at all. Draft and hope Danny finds the right guys!

I've been going between Bender and Jaylen Brown so far. Trading back and still getting brown would prolly be my favorite scenario.

Good to see you posting Derren! I don't follow college ball until the Final four but I've watched some video of Bender and he has a chance to be very good. Hield is a scorer - He set a new record hitting 85 of 100 3 pointers in his workout. But then Brown shot very well also. I'm glad I don't have to make the decision. I have a feeling that Danny is going to trade most of the picks if he can.

When I watch the Cavs play as well as they have the last two games, I realized how far the Celtics are from winning the East. I don't see anyone beating them in the next 2-3 years at least. LeBron, as much as I hate to admit it, is still an absolute beast. So if I'm given as choice between someone who can contribute right now, or someone who has a higher ceiling but whose ability to contribute seriously is still 2 years off, I'm ok with the second guy. I could see us going with one of three guys: Bender, Brown or Dunn (if there is already a deal in place for Smart).
edited to add this from Chad Ford on espn: "Spoke to several teams that had Cal forward Jaylen Brown in for draft workouts. All 3 said his performance was stellar. Shot the ball really well. Was in great shape. After a shaky freshman season, he may be rising in the draft. He has elite physical tools. Celtics seriously considering him at 3."
If Brown has improved his shot enough for this to be true, he's probably the guy. Great NBA body and athleticism, smart and driven.

Contenders are funny things. It's not certain that a team that dominates this season will do so again. LeBron has been incredibly lucky not to have any major injuries over his career. He's due for one. Also who knows if everyone will be back next season. Will other players have injuries? Hard to tell. The Celtics may be fairly close to all the other teams in the East.
Brown held the record for shooting 3's at Celtics workouts for less than a week, making 79 or 100 before Heild hit 85 of 100.

Warning sign about Jaylen Brown? espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4723335/not-the-model-choice-would-celtics-roll-dice-with-jaylen-brownApparently he has really bad numbers in this analytical system, and the Celtics are one of the more numbers-driven teams. I seem to change my mind almost daily about who we should pick. I've done from Bender, to Dunn, then Murray, then Hield, then Brown. Then I read the article above and am more reluctant to pick Brown. I don't want this pick to be a complete bust and I think Brown may be the high risk/high reward choice this year. He could be a home run but also could be Kedrick Brown all over again. Bender works out for the C's today. We'll see what reports come out of that. Dying for Thursday to get here.

Yup, Brown doesn't pass my eyeball test, and reading that article further puts me away from the Jaylen Brown camp.
No thanks at 3.

Every day I read a new article about who the Celtics should pick with good reasons for all of them. Heild, Brown, Dunn, Bender, Murray... and others. I'm just glad I don't have to make that choice. I kind of like the things I'm reading about Bender the most. Seems to have a very high upside. But then we need to have a bit of patience with him as he's young and still somewhat raw.
It seems as though Danny is trying hard to find a trade partner for that 3rd pick. I wouldn't doubt if teams are reluctant to trade with Danny after seeing the way he fleeced the Nets. I just hope Danny makes the right choices and moves.

I wonder how much LeBron's presence enters the team's thinking. If he is going to be around, and dominant, for another 5 years, does that increase the value of a guy like Brown, who has the physical tools to at least slow him down? Even if his (Brown's) offensive potential is murky?
Stories out this morning indicate that Ainge has been spurned at attempts to trade the [HASH]3 for Jabari Parker, Hayward, Middleton, or Butler. Other teams looking for Danny to sweeten the offer, or is the [HASH]3 just not seen as that valuable?
Haven't heard any word about Bender's workout yet. Anyone else?
