Greene May Start
According to the Detroit News, Orien Greene may start over Delonte West. Not sure why a Detroit newspaper has this info but I’ll try to update you if we see it confirmed anywhere.
The Celtics signed free agent Dan Dickau with the idea that he’d be their starting point guard.
Turns out, he will start the season as the third point guard.
Rookie Orien Greene has emerged as the likely starter, beating out second-year man Delonte West.
Update: Looking more closely at this quote I’m not sure how certain they are of the job going to Greene. There’s a difference between “likely starter” and “named starter.” Perhaps they are projecting a bit as Greene outplayed all the C’s point guards this preseason.
This news seems to have been taken for fact by the folks at FanBall.com, which is picked up by Yahoo.com at this link. Basically the Internet version of the telephone game.
I will believe that West will be named the starter until I see a news report that is more clear on the subject.

Your title is deceiving. I though Gerald Green was going to be the starter.
I think for the early part of the season, Delonte will be the starter. I think he has earned Doc's trust. But if its clearly evident that the team plays better with Orien, Delonte could be moved to second string.

If it were me I'd start Orien as a message to the vets that when it's questionable the benefit of doubt goes to the younger guy. It should be clear Delonte is the starter, but he failed to make it clear. Now it should be in OG's hands until he loses it or someone takes it from him.
I also thought GG was the starter from the headline.

If I can recall correctly from the beginning of summer camp, Doc said that Delonte and banks were there to lose the Pg job. Well, we now know that banks HAS lost his job, so if we look at Delonte's performance to date - it's only OK ! He has not separated himself from the pack. But, we ALL can agree that Oriene has been IMPRESSIVE - especially for a ROOKIE ! He runs the break better, is a better defensive player, plays with confidence, the " players" all love to play with him. In my opinion, if it matters, he HAS separated himself from the pack - he CAN, and I mean he CAN, run this basketball team (rookie or not).

Yep, I agree with that. Orien shows so much poise and confidence for a player who has had no prior NBA experience before these preseason games (he was injured during the summer league games). He came right in and started showing his PG skills in leading the team. Very impressive.
And if Delonte doesn't really blow Rivers' socks off, or if the starting rotation is only marginally good with Delonte, it won't be long before Doc lets Orien give it a try.

We could go small with Greene, West and Pierce as our backcourt. Maybe Gomes or Reed with Jefferson at the 5.

I've only gotten to see Greene once (game vs. the Cavs) and that was his least impressive game--but I was still able to get a feel for his game. He's got the ability to be the lead PG this year because he doesn't force things and he has the ability to deliver passes well.

I saw all the pre season games.
And Derren, you are right, the Cavs game was his worst of them all.
BUt even in that game you could see that he could lead a team into its' offense.
Delonte is easily pressured in the backcourt and isn't strong enough to keep an opposing PG off of him.
Delonte should be the backup. He is more suited for that postion with us. The second unit needs his outside shooting.
I would start the season with Orien, Paul, Ricky Blount and LaFrentz.
Those five were by far our best players in the pre season.
When Tony is ready to play I would start him and bring in Ricky.
Our second unit with Big Al, Delonte, Gomes, Scalabrini & Ricky CAN be very good.
I really don't see Kendrick getting minutes at this point. Maybe against someone like Shaq, but I don't really see improvement in his game at the moment.
One more Day!!!!!!!!!!

Did I miss the signing of this guy? ;D

Looks like I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I agree with what you said, LH. Delonte's steady, and heady, play may be just what the unstable second unit needs.
And when Tony comes back, I am definitely in the group who wants him to start so that we can bring Ricky off the bench.

I've seen two things. The games on tv and the stat sheet. In the games Delonte looks better for now. On the stat sheet it's not even close. Orien is about as good as Delonte, but shouldn't be in the sense that Delonte is the vet
