Delonte? Dickau? Greene? Someone else?
I don't think we can count out either Delonte or Dan Dickau yet, by any means. 5 games in limited minutes is not nearly enough time to get any feel for their teammates or the type of system we are running (which is a free flowing offense). Rivers will need to give them more time to evaluate their play.
Orien Greene is looking like not only a keeper, but also someone who could one day challenge for the starting spot. As of right now, he's showing more passing ability and leading ability than either Delonte or Dickau. He's the darkhorse PG to emerge from this bunch and he's also got the most athletic tools. But too early to tell just yet. Will his lack of shooting hurt him?
Ainge really needs to get a pulse on this situation and make a decision. If he doesn't feel like any of these 3 guys can step up and truly take the starting spot, he needs to look elsewhere. I don't want him wasting valuable time if he doesn't feel any of these PG's can make us champions. 3 guys who I'd really want on the team are Sebastian Telfair, Luke Ridnour, and Raymond Felton. These guys are true floor generals and I think we'd greatly benefit from having real PG's setting up our scorers.

Well, yeah. I think the other thread I made a week ago showed that Hinrich was on my mind. But the reason I listed Sebastain, Ridnour, and Felton is because they haven't made their mark on the NBA yet, so their values are not as high as Hinrich's.
I'm hearing that Jarret Jack could be the starter in Portland. This surprised me because Sebastian had a terrific rookie year and also a really solid summer league (I believe he led the Reebok in points and assist). The final 27 games of last season, Telfair got the bulk of the minues at PG (up until then Damon Stoudemire was the starting PG). In those final 27 games, Telfair averaged nearly 6 apg, including such big games as a 17 pt, 11 ast game vs. the Lakers, a 11 pt, 13 ast game vs. the Nuggets, a 16 pt, 10 ast game vs. the Nugs, and an 18 pt, 7 ast game vs. the Suns. Not bad for a rookie straight out of his school. And he's got such a poise about him that makes him play much older than he really is.
I like Ridnour a lot too, but Seattle has decided to give him total control by letting fellow PG Antonio Daniels leave to go to WAS. Ridnour is turning out to be what we hoped Dan Dickau would be for us--a true passing PG who can nail outside shots.
Of course, I just admire Raymond Felton. Brevin Knight continues to amaze me with his assist totals (had 9 in last night's preseason game), so that makes me wonder if the Bobcats would be willing to part with their lottery PG from this past draft. Might need to give them someone good to get Felton, including a PG.
As for our current PG's, Delonte is starting to show life. His defense has been praised by some who have seen last night's game, and he was able to show the ability to handle the press.
Dickau was doing a better job of hitting his open shots.
But Orien got the most rave again. He has been doing the best job leading the breaks among the PG's. You got to think that with that skill, along with his tough defense and athletic gifts, Doc is going to start favoring him.

funny thing is - the season hasn't even begun yet and everybody raves about a guy who didn't play in the summer league because he had a surgery. wonder where's his ceiling? no limit as far as i've seen...
ps - shooting is a correctable flaw...

Shooting form is correctable, but the outcome is not guaranteed to be improved. Some players just can't shoot the ball consistently. Jason Kidd is this way. But remember right before the draft--Orien was able to become more consistent with his form because he had a guy working with him to keep his elbow in. And that made a big difference in his consistency.
But with the surgery and the down time, I think he had a setback. Shooting is all about touch and as long as he's working on his shooting daily, there should be reason for optimism.

The only thging that DeLonte does better than Orien right now is shoot the ball.
I know it's onmloy been 5 pre season gaems that I have seen, but Orien rarely makes a mistake out there.
He has the best handles of all of our PG's. THe think I like is that he doesn't look to shoot the ball. Playing with a guy that is always looking for you will only encourge everyone to get open because they know they will see the rock.
He will start the season as the backup, but I really think if he played with our starters, his limited offensive skills will be masked by the fact that he won't need to force shots. Plus Delonte on the second unit gives us another shooter off of the bench.

Yeah, his last 2 games is very optimistic. Sounds like he's coming around just fine.
I can't wait to see Orien because I want to get a feel for his game to see if he has the goods to become our lead PG on our team that wins #17. Sometimes, a PG may look good, but his potential may not be enough.
I'm hoping that when I see him, I'll get the feel that he can be that impactful PG who starts for our champinship team.

Delonte still fits in the mix. I like the potential combo of Delonte and Greene. Right now Delonte is the smarter defender imo. Greene has the potential to be an excellent defender and more physical though. Greene reminds me a lot of ERic Snow when he first came in teh league for some reason. Can't shoot but he can learn.... Delonte is more of a scorer and just a smart all around player.

I'm hoping he's not as boring as Eric Snow. That guy was no fun to watch.
Sounds like Orien is a better playmaker than Delonte is.

Orien looks to be alot better athlete than Snow. I've never seen Snow throw down a two handed dunk on a break.
DeLonte is a VERY smart basketball player but I've never really seen him break his man down and create a layup for a teammate.
Oriens' play would seem to make Marcus expendable come the all star break. If Marcus gets some PT when he comes back, it will be to show case him. (that's if Orien shows he can continue it in the REAL games)
I'm not as down on DeLonte as I am UP on Orien.
He reminds me of a smaller more athletic Adrian Griffin.

His face looks like Adrian Grffin, no doubt. If anyone of you watched Kansas Jayhawks games the past 3 years, Keith Langford was a guy who I thought played a lot like Adrian Griffin.
So Greenwave, you think Orien Greene can be a good playmaker? I'm hearing that he had some nice drives to set up players for easy scoring opportunities. Do you think he can do this consistently?

Hi...everyone !!! So good to be back...was away for a few days, in Ft. Lauderdale, attending Cardiac doctor - JUST got out before the HURRICANE ! The treatments went well !
OG !!!!! He's the real deal. This was one of my hopefuls. According to my scouting report, I knew that he was going to turn heads - he hailed from Florida University. These guys tend to have steel nerves.
I will predict that this guy, Orien, will play big minutes at the pg. He can run an effective fast break, play NBA defense and is so, so comfortable on the floor ! He doesn't rush things....he let's the game come to him. His biggest weakness - shooting the ball. With the right offensive weapns on the floor, that can be disguised by Doc. Remember that DJ was a clutch shooter, but not a shooter ! Bird, Mchale, Parish and Ainge did the shooting ! But, I also believe that his shot WILL improve ! Watch out for the GREEN Machine (Gerald and Orien). They will be farther than most EXPECTED !!!

I have to admit seeing Orien Greene over the weekend, he did look very good running the point. EVERY time he touched the ball he looked to pass. I think his only shot attempt on Saturday night was that breakaway two handed dunk. (From what I saw) Out of the three point guards, he definitely has the highest ceiling. In the beginning of the preseason, I hadn't bought into all of the Orien hype, because I just didn't have that many expectations from a late second round pick. Having said that, barring any trades, by the All-Star break, or maybe before he probably will be starting. He had a few "highlight" passes over the weekend. Not in terms of fanciness, but in terms of difficult passes made to look easy by Orien. He made some simply great passes that resulted in easy baskets;passes that are not normally routine, he was making routine.
Gomes and Veal actually went as far as to say that he reminded them of Jason Kidd. I think they need to chill with those kind of statements, and not get carried away, but he did look very good. For his size (6’4’’) and the way he plays D, and the way he runs the offense, he is a real good prospect for the C’s to have. Let’s hope he gets better and progresses throughout the season. Expect to see a lot more out of him in the last few preseason games.
