Neither Delonte, nor Dickau, have been able to capture the starting spot outright. There has been little written about Marcus Banks and Will Bynum.
But of the 5 PG's vying for a spot, either as as starter or making the team, Orien Greene has been the one getting most of the attention from Rivers (and the Globe and Herald).
He's impressed Doc with his defensive abilities and for catching onto the offensive schemes despite only being cleared to play basketball last week.
If Banks doesn't step up, Orien could potentially take his spot as the 3rd PG on the depth chart, behind of Delonte and Dickau.
Speaking of Delonte and Dickau, it seems both guys are pressing too hard, which is not allowing their true games shine through. Brian Scalabrine mentioned that we are using a lot of pick and rolls and passing on offense, and this is what Delonte said he had been working hard on all summer. Hopefully he'll start to get his game on track and show the ability to run the pick and roll well.

I admit maybe I have been living in the past with Banks. Clearly DWest and OG may improve, whereas I'm not sure I can expect Banks to just "get it". he'll be a fine 3rd stringer getting by on speed for years on a low contract

Rivers said that he had no idea who Orien Greene was during the tryout process prior to the draft. But they brought him in for a workout, and as he watched Greene go up against Jarret Jack, he began asking what this kid's name is. Rivers said that Greene was blocking Jack's shots and playing really good defense on him. It was his defense that caught Rivers' eye.
He was also named defensive player of the year for his conference in back to back years (junior and senior season).
At 6'4" - 6'5" with long arms and a fairly athletic body, Orien can be a real defensive pest on opposing PG's. And seeing how he's impressing Rivers by the way he's running the offense in training camp, I wonder how long it will take him to move passed Marcus Banks. I honestly don't know how Banks has been doing in practices because the media has not been covering him, but you'd think that if he was looking really good, something would have been said about him.
With a solid preseason, Orien Greene may not only stick with our parent club, but also be the 3rd PG on the depth chart.

I think Greene will be a much better player than most think. I trust Danny's vision.

Yeah, so do I. I mean, consider this; Greene impressed Rivers during the predraft tryouts, even though he was running on a broken foot that needed surgery. He was blocking Jack's shots, and Jarret was one of the nation's better PG prospects in the draft.
Ainge said that he had an eye on Orien for awhile and he's got a soft spot for tall PG's.
Rivers did have a negative thing to say about Orien, though. He says that his shot needs work. Orien isn't known for his jumper, but there was mention about it become steadier at the time of the draft because he was working out with a trainer who helped him to iron out his mechanics on his shooting form. And since Orien had been out of basketball for nearly 2 months, its to be expected that he'd lose some of what he'd worked on.
If Orien did have a jump shot, though, he may leapfrog over a few guys on the depth chart.

If Greene went to a major D1 school, he would have been a first round pick.

Ok ok oK ok just stop it.You have talked me into it. Oriene Greene has a good shot at being the best 53rd pick ever and a good pg. But can we maybe agree he won't be greta this year? Maybe he'll be the #2 guy next year? There's a reason practically the whole world doesn't know who he is.

I love what I'm hearing about Orien. He just may be our future PG, possibly over Delonte. But we still have to see more of those two in action before we can make a better guess on who the future of the PG position belongs to.

Alright guys, we reeled one in!!!! ;D
He's a tall PG who looks to pass more than he does for his own shot. He's got good athleticism, long arms, defensive abilities, and is an excellent ball handler. What's not to like about this guy.
I guess it isn't out of the question for him to move into the top spot on the depth chart eventually--but I'd imagine his jumper would have to get consistent for that to happen. More importantly, he'll need to make the offense run smooth. If he does this better than Delonte and Dickau, he moves to the top spot.
But this is very premature. We can't hope that he's this good without seeing him in action vs. real competition first. Like Doc mentioned today, our players may look good going up against each other, partly because they know the what the others are going to do, so they know how to guard them and they know what the defense is going to do. But we'll need to see how they fair against other teams when they don't know what to expect from the defense.

On Hoopshype, there was a piece where Ainge says that Dan Dickau is our most talented offensive player, refering among the PG's.
I'm sure if Ainge was the one making the roster decisions, Dickau's offensive abilities would be a huge plus. But Doc may not only want the guy who is the best offensive player among the PG's. Doc may prefer a more defensive minded PG at the starting spot, sacrificing some offense for better defense.
The PG battle isn't determined yet. I'm sure we'll start to see who Rivers is favoring by the way he distributes the playing time in these preseason games.

Wait wait wait Dmatts. You havn't seen OG play? If not I would have to take a more moderate position of stating that it's good he made the team and injuries made him slip but that we can't expect a lot out of him. You seem the most excited about a backup that i've ever seen if you think he may not beat out DWest and/or Dickau
