Doc has been singing high praises of Perkins since he's got here. Here's what he said in his recent chat:
Doc Rivers: I love his presence on the board as well and on the defensive end. He's our best shotblocker and lowpost defender. He needs to work on staying out of foul trouble and sometimes it's just a matter of getting the minutes so you can learn that.
Says that Perkins is the team's best shotblocker and lowpost defender. Hard to argue that (but take that with a grain of salt because we don't exactly have Ben Wallace-types on the team). **As a note, I remember that Perkins was said to also be the best rebounder on the team. But as I watched Big Al Jefferson crash the boards and go after long rebounds, it became clear to me that he was the best rebounder on the team, moving past Perkins. I guess Rivers thinks so also.**
Do you Greeniacs feel that Perkins is going to secure the starting spot sometime in the future, whether it be this year, next year, or in coming years? With him being our best shotblocker and lowpost defender, and with him having a rock solid body and brute strength, can he be that Center we need to cement our starting 5 who'll take us to the promise land?

I could see him starting, after 20-40 games, on a regular basis. Let's see him stay out of foul trouble first. The preseason will tell us a lot.

darn i hope he starts but realistically not this season. i think when all is said and done then doc pairs lafrentz with jefferson as starters and perkins with scalabrine as primary back-ups. Blonut is question mark as well that can seriously alter the rotation but right now i can't see him dethroning anybody

I hope so, but i dont think so. Lafrentz is gonna start at least for the 1st half of the year.

Not this year, but eventually I can definitely see Perkins as our starting center. The main reasons, besides the obvious ones Doc pointed out, is that he doesn't need the ball in his hands to be happy and concentrate on the game, plus he is an excellent outlet passer per Ainge, which can with experience translate into a good half-court passer. With all the young scorers on our team, we need someone who will be content to do the dirty work and not demand the ball, and Perkins definitely has the character and personality to be that guy. I also foresee many outlet passes finding happy recipients in a year or two.

Well, the 2nd part to my question was if you all thought that Perkins could be the starting Center on our dynasty team. If Perkins is indeed our best shotblocker and lowpost defender, I think he'll find time on the court right away. But help defense is almost nearly as important as shutting down players individually. Perkins seems to get into trouble when he has to move more than a couple of steps to his left or right quickly--he's just not built that way. He has done a wonderful job of improving his mobility by lessening his body weight, though. Its not that Perkins will be a liability on the court. With the amount of talented players we have on offense and defense, Perkins' task will mainly be to rebound and defend. But to build a dynasty, I'd think you'd need a dominant defensive big man and I don't think Perkins can be considered that.
I don't know--I'm still on the fence with this one. Not sure if I see Perkins as the starting Center on a dynasty team. More of a defensive backup Center extraordinaire. And the way Doc explains his strengths, he seems to fit in this bill.

Too raw to tell if Perkins can be a starting center in this league. Not to mention its hard to imagine him to stay on the court for 25 mins a game without fouling out at this point. He is one of the better rebounders/ shotblockers on the team but if you can't stay out of foul trouble you're pretty much useless.

I certainly don't see him starting at the beginning of the year. For one reason---he is foul prone, and that will be more of a problem for a green starter going against mroe veteran 5s. By mid season, who knows.
Parish was not a huge scorer, as I recall. And wasn't a major low post option. Perkins could wind up scoring something like Parish in more of a low post, garbage (Silas) role.
I think the key is his defense. He obviously has some good defensive skills. ?Can he move neough to play team defense without the fouls?

Sometimes I think Doc is too afraid to let the best players play, usually just cause they aren't veterans. Veteran means nothing. Raef is a vet. All that means is that he's been bad for a long time. There were so many times last year I was like "Why isn't Al J playing? Why is Blount playing?" There's only a few possible reasons. Stupidity and cowardice are two of them.

I think Doc has learned from last year. He certainly should play whoever makes the team better, regardless of how young they are. If Perkins is outplaying Blount, let him play more than Blount.

I def think that Perk could be a starting C in the future. I could see him being a 8pt, 12reb, 2.5blk kind of guy.

Perk is an Eric Dampier guy with a soul imo. He isnt a guy that is just going to play for a contract and then disapear. He is a team player and he has talent. I think Perk will be that guy eventually, but Im still not sure.

Yep CF. Mt Perk was always the first guy there to help one of his teammates up after they were knocked to the floor. He is a team player with a big heart and lots of desire. Can't wait to see his future in Celtic green.

Hey C17. Yeah he is mroe than just a paycheck. I look for players like that. That's why I'm a big fan of his and hope he does well. Heart isnt everything, you need to have talent too, but he has that I think, he just has to work on a lot of fundamental things. I hope the C's can teach him well... I still feel bad for him when he was forced into that playoff game to shoot FT's for Pierce.. You could tell by the look on his face he just felt absolutely horrible when he missed them.
