I was just at the market and waiting for my wife to pick up some stuff from one of the aisles. I decide to go to the front of the store and wait on the bench (I hate shopping).
While I am sitting there thay have this vending machine, you know the ones that usually have like chips and candy bars that always get stuck. Well, this machine had packs of cards in them. Baseball, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-oh (sp) and of course basketball.
For some reason, I haven't bought basketball cards in ages, I decided to buy a pack of the B-Ball cards. The price was right, they were only a $1.00 for some and $2.00 for others. I noticed that there was a pack of "Victory 2003-04 by Upper Deck" cards with 6 to a pack for a buck. They had LeBron's photo with the caption, "Look for the Rookie cards featuring players from the 2003 NBA draft. I inserted my dollar and was about to hit the buttons that correspond with the pack on that row, but then I noticed a pack for a buck on the top row. This was a pack of "Sky Box - Inaugural Edition" 15 cards. I said what the heck lets see if I get like and old Larry or Jordan Bulls or anything cool like that.
I pressed A7 and watched as the pack started to move looking like their gonna get stuck. It didn't. The pack came down and I felt the excitement like I was a kid again getting a pack of NBAHOOPS. I hurridly pushed the door and grabed the pack. It was hard to open it seemed like they made this tougher to open or something. I don't remember it being so hard.
In any case, I finally broke the seal. 1st card, 1990 Moses Malone, Hawks. 2nd, Grant Long, Heat. 3rd, Jerome Richardson, Wolves. 4th, David Greenwood, Detroit. 5th, Brad Davis, Mavs. 6th, Jeff Martin, Clips. Nothing really exciting so far. Moses was cool. Richardsons card was cool, but I was like why the rest of these scrubs! Oh well, only a dollar right?
Everthing changed once I flipped to the 7th card. Reggie Lewis 1990! He must have been waiting for me! Calling me from behind the glass of this crappy vending machine. Saying, "but this pack, forget LeBron!". Now, if you know me, you know I like the number 7 and the number 4. The buttons to select that pack was A7. The 7th card was Reggie's. It is all very coincidental or maybe not.
In case you're all wondering what other cards I got in the Skybox Inaugural pack, they were Jerome Kersey's Portland card, Michael Ansley Magic card, James Worthy, Tellis Frank Miami, Will Perdue Bulls, Purvis Short NJ, Scott Brooks Philly, Eddie Johnson, Suns.
Oh yeah, I still bought the Upper Deck set too. No LeBron in it. I got Jay Williams, Elton Brand, Cliff Robinson, Mike Dunleavy, Anfernee Hardaway, and Gary Payton.
