Seems like this kid has been at Duke for 30 years, doesn't it?
Most of the times, when I'm looking at Center prospects I'd choose to play for us, I tend to sort them out in 2 groups. The first group includes guys who I think can be better than Perkins (and Raef) and the second are guys who I feel can be just as good or slightly below Perkins' level. The reason I separate them this way is because I view Perkins as a borderline starter. With improvements this season, he could be our starting Center. If he remains as is, he's a backup. But we're in this business to win a lot of games and I'm hoping for another Celtics Dynasty and I feel that in order to establish a dynasty, we're going to need a better Center than Perkins. Its not that I view Perkins as a bad player like Mark Blount. I just feel that Perkins is going to be an average, slightly above average Center in this league because of his lack of agility and quick lateral movements.
Which brings me to this guy--Sheldon Williams. He's built like Perkins is (big, strong body, long arms), and has the same type of mentality on defense (very tenacious on the boards and with blocking shots). Where he differentiates from Perkins is where I list Perkins' weaknesses at--his agility and quick lateral movements. Sheldon moves very well for such a strong kid. I wouldn't put him in the same boat as Al Jefferson in terms of speed and agility for a 6'10" player, but he's very close.
Its like if I could add a physical trait onto Perkins that would make him a better player, I would add agility. And this is what Sheldon Williams is--an agile and quicker Kendrick Perkins.
And Sheldon isn't skipping a beat defensively. Last season, he averaged 11.2 rpg and blocked 3.7 shots per game, on top of scoring 15.5 ppg. 3.7 blocks per game is very impressive, and its all due to his long arms, strong body, tenacity on defense, timing, quickness, and agility.
I would seriously look into grabbing this kid in this year's draft.
