Hey Derren, If you're checkin' out Bass in today's LSU vs. Kentucky game, take a look at my "hidden gem" prospect: I mentioned him for an earlier thread, the 7'3" SHAGARI ALLEYNE. Is he a stiff or does he have potential? Just a sophmore at KU right now. comes from the Bronx. In fact, I think Bass and Alleyne will be matched up a few times today.

Good idea to have a seperate category for the draft, and Derren to run it. Glad Charlie V (I think one night I was tired of trying to spell his last name, and just went w/ the V) made the list. Like Boone w/Derren, Charlie V has been on my radar since coming to UCONN.

Nice derren. hmmm can i ask anything? what do i do when i get a girl in my bedroom? oh wait this is about basketball sorry.
What do you think about Rashard Anderson.? Uconn plays tonight on espn against pitt. We all know about the big three Boone, Charlie V, and Rudy Gay. But uconn is known for producing swingmen, funny that all we talk about now is big men. Anyways, I think rashard is a true sleeper for a pro team. The kid can flat out shoot but isn't really getting the pub because of the others on this team. I think he has a chance to make a huge impact on a team as a 2nd round pick, probably next year. Not that we need him, but i love him. but as all know i am biased to my uconn roots.

DM- Nice start here... Next one to check out, 6'3 PG/WG Luther Head, sr, Illinois, what do you see here? Athletic player that can play point. Kind of reminds me of Lefty's game. What do you see? My main thing is his height. I like a taller PG.

hey Derren congrats on having your own "corner". I was wondering what do you think of Ryan Gomes from Providence college. I live in Rhode Island and go to PC games regularly. I think he can be a pretty good player. He is a bit of a tweener but he rebounds and can score inside and outside. Keep up the good work.

Question (MrBeefy): I was wondering what do you think of Ryan Gomes from Providence college.
I've heard him referred to as a "meat and potatoes" guy, and I think that's right on the mark. This guy isn't flashy, isn't exciting, isn't a high flyer, isn't much of anything. But he is a solid player who can score and rebound. What's amazing about Gomes is how efficient he is for being a guy with average speed and average athleticism. There is nothing about him which says that he can be one of the countries better players--but he is.
At the next level, I think he will find his share of difficulties. First of all, he's too slow to play either SG or SF and he's too short to play PF. He doesn't have much of a vertical and his game is strictly on the ground. At Providence, he's able to do his damage by getting dirty and bumping guys to clear some space for his offense. In the NBA, he'll be facing guys who are either stronger than him, or taller and quicker than him. He's sort of like David West, the second year player for the Hornets out of Xavier. But West has more quickness and athleticism than Gomes.
When I see Gomes play, I see Paul Pierce. Except that Pierce is more athletic than he is, and dare I say, quicker. Their games are fairly similar, except that Pierce is more of a wing player than Gomes.
I don't see Gomes as a starter in the NBA, and his game doesn't suit coming off the bench. His game is in the halfcourt, and bench players generally make their impact by being energy players or specialists.
He'd be a better fit for a halfcourt team, like the Houston Rockets. I have a feeling he'd work well with Yao Ming.

Question (Joneb): Derren let me humbly ask your "world-ly" opinion of local UVM talent Taylor Coppenrath- is he someone we should be looking at?
Sorry, Joneb. I won't pretend to know much about Taylor Coppenrath. I've only gotten to see him once, and it was only for a few minutes. From that, all I could say is that he reminds me of Chris Kaman. Maybe its because both are caucasion players with the same build. His stats indicate that he is a terrific scorer (averaging about 24 ppg the last 2 years) and a quality rebounder. But can he perform at the next level? I don't think his chances are good. It's one thing to be a skilled but unathletic 7 footer (Chris Kaman). But its another thing to be a skilled but unathletic 6'9" player.
Vermont isn't going to have any nationally televised games this year, so unfortunately, I may never get to see him before he leaves UV. At this time, Coppenrath isn't even listed on NBADrafts mock draft for this year. I'm sure he'll be a second round pick, though.

Question (JoeC43): Could you give me the lowdown on Adam Morrison of Gonzaga? Joey Graham of OSU? Could be the players to fit our big 3 wishes!
I've talked about Joey Graham in some of my past draft prospects threads. Basically, this guy is a talented and athletic power SF, but he isn't as skilled as he needs to be to succeed at the next level. On athleticism and talent alone, he can be drafted in the mid to late first round. He's a combination of power, speed, and athleticism. But what he's missing is the basketball sense and court awareness. He's one of those players who doesn't anticipate plays or passes all that well and is more of a reactive player than a proactive player. He has an excellent shooting touch, sometimes even hitting a three pointer. He can score around the rim and hit midrange jumpers. He's a tamed Kenyon Martin. With his athleticism, power, speed, and leaping ability, you'd think that Joey Graham would be close to a double digit rebounder--but he isn't. And this is because he isn't strong in the basketball awareness department. He gives is a good effort in the box, but when the ball is on its way to the rim, he doesn't know the bounces and caroms so he just waits until the ball bounces and then goes after the ball.
As for Adam Morrison, he reminds me of a slower Wally Szcerbiak. I'm going to try and catch a few Gonzaga games to get a clearer idea of Morrison, but from the early indications I've seen from him, I'm not really impressed. Luke Walton impressed me. Adam Morrison hasn't. But I'll post more of my thoughts on him after I get to see him more.

Charlie V has definitely been more consistent the second half of the season vs. Boone. Boone, like last night for example, has had games where he gets into foul trouble and is uneffective for the rest of the game.
Personally, I think Boone will not come out this year. He is too smart to realize he needs another year to develop. Charlie V on the other hand, he was contemplating coming out last year, and looks more eager to enter the NBA.

charlie V is outplaying boone lately isn't he? Yes he has. But not because Boone's game has been in decline. He's picking up too many fouls and this causes Jim Calhoun to bench him for big parts of the 1st half. The reason why is because Boone usually guards the opponent's best big man and he's an aggressive defender. A bunch of calls are ticky tack fouls, but so be it. Charlie V has definitely stepped it up, though. Especially on the boards and when it comes to attacking the basket. He's playing his way into the mid first round slot of the draft.

My main thing is his height. I like a taller PG.
But C17, a 6'3" PG is a tall PG. Payton and Kidd are 6'4". You must mean Magic Johnson tall.
I've got a bunch of Illinois games on tape (I'm a big Dee Brown fan). Luther Head is a good shooter, but I haven't seen much of his PG game because ahead of him is Deron Williams and Dee Brown--2 guys who should be in the NBA shortly.
Rather than watching Luther Head, you should pay attention to Roger Powell. This guy is a tough guy with some nasty-ness. Physical SG with shooting ablity. Nice role player.

I'm a big Dee Brown fan You might want to watch the Iowa game before you set him as your draft pick. We shut him down... I would rather have Luther Head than Dee Brown any day. I might be alone with that thought, but I'll stick with it. And 6'3" is tall when you are looking at Marcus Banks. ;D
