We definitely got the better talent out of the deal. Yes, Ray Allen is going to be 32 years old and is coming off ankle injuries (which have no structural damage btw). But, what we do get is one of the permeir SG in the game. An Absolute onslaught when it comes to shotting the ball 24 ft and out. Not to mention, he can drive to the hole when he wants to. RA can flat out shoot the ball. Also, really an underrated ball-handler/passer which alot people don't put into account when talking about Ray Allen. I think alot of us will see a huge difference between the SGs we have now compared to the caliber SG we got in this deal.
Probably the best part about this trade is that we don't give up our two best-prospects in Al Jefferson and Rajon Rondo. Even Ainge mention them that they have the potential to be special players in this league. It goes to show that Ainge has faith in them to the point where he doesn't make a trade for KG or add Rondo to the Allen deal for Swift. He feels these two guys will step-up to be superstars in this league. Now, we can still have a future down the road not closing the window for a 2-3 span to win a championship.
Like you guys said, now ainge needs to go out there to add some PG and center depth before the season starts. I think we still have an opportunity to add a Marcus Camby or add a cheap defensive vet to back-up KP.
We should be aight with RA and the young guys. If our players keep improving then we might be able to make a push into the playoffs possibly going deep in them. Now, its all about what these young vets can do for us. We know Allen and Pierce will be balling for wins but, will the others step-up when their number has been called?

I don't know much at all about the salary cap. But I think the owners ought to be prepared gto pay some luxury tax if necessary to sign a FA big man---not for 12-14 million----but something under 10---to get a 3rd big who can be in the mix. The previous owner pockets a good bit of profit. And, although these guys are a different sort, they're not paupers and could do something like that in the short term. I think the Davis choice may not be bad for the second round. But it probably will be a project somewhat like Perk and AJ, except it should go more quickly if Davis is willing to work. He is older and has a better idea of what it should take. I would think they might be better off to bring him straight to Boston rather than sending him to a summer league. Show him some old film of Rick Roby.
Not sure about the guard. HONORABLE MENTION All-Pac 10? That isn't overwhelming.

Just some notes. Danny was on FSN today and said he really liked Yi and he also liked Delonte obviously. He basically said he would have been happy to draft in this draft but they made the decision to maximize Pierce's career. And they still have young guys Rajon and Al. No mention of Green which is odd. So pretty much this trade was Yi and Delonte for Ray. I would have drafted but that's that. I think we are going to trade RAtliff and Green for a big man. He basically said the price for Garnett, JO, Marion etc was too steep and teams wanted Jefferson or Rajon and they were able to keep these guys and make this deal why they did it.

For a good while we have read that other things think Cs have overvalued their kids. Now it doesn't look like it. Lots of people wantted AJ and apparently Rondo also. And took West in a trade.

from Bill Simmons at ESPN and live draft diary
"Thanks to rumors that the Celtics might trade the No. 5 pick, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West for a soon-to-be 32-year-old shooting guard coming off double ankle surgeries (Ray Allen), I just spent the last 20 minutes on basketball-reference.com trying to find one great shooting guard who didn't decline significantly in Years 12 through 14 of his NBA career. Here's the list: Reggie Miller. That's it. Also, I just threw up in my mouth and some of it went up the back of my nose."
"Unless there's another major move coming -- and Lord, let's hope so -- are we really contending for the title in 2008 or 2009 with Pierce, Jefferson, Allen, Doc Rivers and nine unproven young guys? Are we even winning 47 games? Three seasons from now, if you're watching Doc and Danny Ainge announcing the same TNT game, then you flick channels and see a broken-down Ray Allen jogging around a half-empty TD Banknorth Center at age 34, you'll think of me. I promise you."
"To be clear, I'm a big Allen fan: He's an excellent player; he always wanted to play in Boston (unlike everyone else in the league); I would have loved this trade if he were 28 or 29; and it's hard to top the comedy of Ray Allen and Allan Ray playing for the same team.
Here's the problem: Allen's draft class was the year before I wrote my first draft diary. His movie ("He Got Game") came out nearly a decade ago. He played at UConn with Donyell Marshall, Donny Marshall and Doron Sheffer. This guy is not a spring chicken -- just look at his hairline, for cripes' sake. This feels like Mitch Richmond going to the Bullets for C-Webb all over again. I'm somewhere between "quitting coffee and trying to make it through Day 3" rattled and "waiting for the results of an HIV test" rattled"
"Marc Stein sends me an e-mail about the Allen trade that ends, "It could have turned out worse." Great. That's just the celebratory e-mail I was hoping for on draft night: "It could have turned out worse.""
"I'm busy trying to find the right adjective for my father on the phone right now. Beaten down? Distraught? Perplexed? Horrified? Apoplectic? All of them fit. He's absolutely appalled by the Allen trade.
"Shooting guards always lose their legs when they hit 32 or 33!" Dad yelps. "It happens to all of them. They can't avoid it. Make sure you put in your column that we traded the fifth and seventh picks in consecutive years for a point guard who was too short and a shooting guard who was too old. Put that in your column. Put it in. I hate this trade.""
"I'm starting to cheer up. Pierce, Jefferson and Allen … maybe I can talk myself into this. That's not a bad top three, you have to admit.
(By the way, I'm drinking heavily. Just so you know.)"
I'm in agreement with these comments too.

I'm on record liking the Allen deal. I would like another move bringing in another PG back-up.
good night to you all....

I'm on record liking the Allen deal. I would like another move bringing in another PG back-up. good night to you all.... Hey c17, nice to read your posts again -- it's been a while. As I noted in the "other thread" (5th pick off the block) I would have kept the pick, but can understand why the trade was made and can see it work out well. We should still have the MLE to use, so we may be able to pick up a veteran mentor for Rondo. And in a "contract year" maybe Ratliff "finds" the health to be a contributor as a back-up center. As Nash and Kidd have show, players don't necessarily shrivel-up or fade away when they hit the 30s -- and Allen for the most part has played over 70 games per season in his career, and his past two years have been his highest scoring ones -- so there should be fuel in the proverbial tank for the remaining years of his contract. Green Kool-aid anyone?

Remember Clyde Lovelette in his year with the Cs? Couldn't motor at all, but that guy could stand in the corner and bury them.

Did ferbo just name drop Clyde Lovelette? That's got to be worth about 75 koolaid points.

He was a big guy who could---and WOULD---shoot it from downtown.

I wonder if Lovelette did anything basketball-related after his playing days were over. Dude was one of the first stars of the league.

Either Pruitt or (Allen) Ray gets cut from the team. Can't see the club having 4 PGs. Or if Tel-fodder has another run-in w/ the law, he will be cut.

DA thinking he wants to maximize PPs career is a really weird thing to say. Why not maximize Toines? Or maybe the Bucks can maximize Michael Redd. Or maybe The Clippers should really try to maximize Elton Brand's career. I mean these fourth tier guys win chcampionships all the time, right?
For Gabe Pruit I think the idea might be to get a cheap vet like Atkins for a year, and throw Pruit and Ray in the DL for a year, and next year see if one sticks. My understanding is that Pruitt is a shoot first pg, which is exactly what we don't need.

Pruitt's stats this year are something like 5 assists/game and 2.5 assists per TO and 12.2 ppg on .416 fg%. So basically he is bad.

Another thing that kills me about this trade is why did we have to include Delonte? You're telling me they don't send us a hurth 32 year old if we substitute Bassy or Ray or Powe or Scala? No way. Once again the Celts outbid themselves and once again DA gets us a player who is hurt. It seems like every player he trades for or resigns is either hurt, has attitude problems or both. Now DA is starting new territory. Trading cheap youth for expensive old guys.
