Celtics star collared on gun charge on Bronx River Parkway; team has no comment

YONKERS - Boston Celtics star Sebastian Telfair was arrested early today after police said a loaded hand gun was found in his car when he was stopped for speeding on the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers.

Telfair, 21, who gave police addresses in White Plains and his native Brooklyn, was stopped shortly before 4 a.m. on the northbound Bronx River Parkway, when police said his 2006 Landrover was clocked going 77 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone.

Police said Telfair, who was driving, produced a Florida driver's license that had been suspended. Westchester County Police Officer Adrian Camacho subsequently found a loaded .45-caliber handgun under the front passenger seat, Westchester County police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.

A short time later Camacho discovered a loaded .45 caliber handgun under the front passenger seat, O'Leary said.

Telfair and a passenger in the car, Al Eden Fuentes, 28, of Queens, were both charged with second-degree possession of a weapon, a felony. Telfair was also hit with a misdemeanor charge of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and issued summonses accusing him of speeding and driving without a license violations.

"He was very polite and cooperative with our officer,'' O'Leary said of Telfair, who along with Fuentes was being held by county police this morning.

Both men are expected to be arraigned later today in Yonkers City Court.

Reached shortly before noon, Celtics spokeswoman Erica Hunt said the team would have no comment at this time.

My goodness, when is this kid going to learn? This is rather disappointing, after the fact that he already went through this in Portland, and also that incident in New York early in the year.

He's got to realize that his career isn't set in stone yet and before he proves himself on the court, he's got to be a good citizen and stay out of trouble.

I hope this doesn't get him dropped out of Boston because I still feel he can make good on his potential, but it certainly doesn't help.

The players on the Celtics have been explicitly warned, this year, to obey the team and league gun prohibition as well as state laws. We take this very seriously, and will act accordingly once the facts have been determined,'' Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said Friday night.

Telfair and Fuentes, 28, said they knew nothing about the gun, O'Leary said. Police still were investigating whether the gun was registered.

I'm worried that this may lead to Telfair being traded.

If it does happen, Ainge needs to replace him with Mike Conley Jr.. I would have no problem losing Bassy if we get Conley.

They don't know anything about the gun? I get the feeling Bassy is worse than dumb. He has backwards reverse stupidity where he thinks everyone else is dumb.

I think Cousy might break the record for the oldest player to enter the NBA draft. Are there rules against that like there are for highschoolers? He might have to come in as an unrestricted free agent.

A couple of quotes in today's papers are interesting.

First from the Herald

“Believe me, he’s not going to wear green again,” said a team source who requested anonymity.

Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck and director of basketball operations Danny Ainge declined comment beyond a short but strongly worded statement by the former.

“We are taking this situation very seriously and are continuing to gather information on the matter,” said Grousbeck. “Our players have been explicitly warned this season about the consequences of violating the law, as well as league and team policies regarding handguns. There will be significant consequences for any violation of these policies. We will closely monitor developments and take the appropriate action once we have all the facts.”

And the other from Lower Hudson Online

Fuentes' lawyer, William Aronwald, said his client works as an assistant to Telfair and is a student at Kingsborough Community College. Fuentes is on probation for criminally negligent homicide as a result of a fatal car crash. Aronwald would not comment on the charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Telfair's lawyer, Ed Hayes, could not be reached for comment.

At first I thought that Fuentes would take the rap for the gun but after reading this, there is no way he will say it was his since he is on probation. If anything, Telfair should own up to it because a weapons charge would be worse for his friend on probation.

I'm a religious person, and tend to be forgiving. And in most circumstances in life, I have been and am a nurturing person.

BUT I hope that the Cs take a hard line on this, and get rid of ST, one way or the other. Trade him, or cut him.

A conclusion I have sadly come to over the years and hold to at the age of 64: some people never learn. With all the attention which has been given to athlet4es and weapons, and the fact that he already had an offense, I have to wonder if ST isn't one of them.

This is a young team. Outside of Allen, none of them has strayed. And we need to hold judgment on Allen until the facts are in. ?But as I recall, the rest have been clean.

Personally I don't go to night clubs, and think PP was stupid to go to one in the wee hours of the morning. But I know the vast majority of pro athletes do enjoy that form of entertainment. But I'd like the Green to be sure that those that don't do not take guns with them, in their hip pocket or in the car.

I'm glad he was polite and cooperative, but that doesn't amount to diddly as far as I'm concerned.

Just read an article on SI that said Telfair probably played his last game for the Celtics, and perhaps even in the NBA.
