I really don't know much about his coaching ability. Anyone out there have insight? Is he too old to get into coaching again?

How about Dave Cowens? He is always mentioned, but never gets a nod.

You know how they say given enough times a room full of monkeys could write Shakepeare? in comparisson to Doc right now I'd rather have a brian damaged elephant (he'd do a way better job of not forgetting to play the best players or take out the worst), or a dying turtle, or an injured bat, or God forbid an ephigy of Red, than Doc. Seeing as how one of them is dead and the others have no experience they would have tremendous upside potential as coaches, whereas Doc has maxed out.

How about Dave Cowens? He is always mentioned, but never gets a nod. I just remember Cowens as coach of the Charlotte Hornets and the Warriors from a few years ago, and those teams weren't good. I'd ideally like to get a coach with a proven track record. That's sort of why I'm also hesitant on DJ. I remember him as coach of the Clippers for a short stint, and I didn't get a good first impression.

I still wish Heinsohn would coach this team. Talk about a guy that gets it.

I also think KC Jones, DJ, Ainge himself, or Paul Westphal would be good options. KC Jones I dont know a whole lot about his coaching ability but he was a fast player that thrived in the up tempo game if I remember correctly. I tend to think he was the benefactor of coaching some pretty damn good teams though. It was before my time but that is what I would guess. Bird, Mchale, Parish can make you look like a pretty good coach.

Paul Westphaul gained his fame as a coach as his Suns teams battled Jordan's Bulls in the '93 Finals. I think of him as a good offensive minded coach, but not sure what he brings to the table defensively. The Suns weren't known for their defense, and neither was the Sonics team he coached a few years ago.
If anything, Ainge takes over for the remainder of the season, and in the offseason he brings in a new head coach. I don't think Ainge trusts anyone else to run the operations upstairs but himself, and that's why he'll remain as head of operations.

DJ would be a good pick if we are looking for defense and a guy that is celtic minded.

The Celtics always kept it in-house in the old days. We need an ex-Celtic who has Celtic Pride running through their veins to coach this team... I don't think KC would want to return to coaching because I read an article a month or so again saying how much he is enjoying what he is doing now. I don't know if he would be the best for a young learning team because he was more suited to a veteran team as he didn't teach much but just let them play.
Cousy would make an excellent coach. He is part of the family and you know that he knows basketball just listening to him on the broadcasts. I think he would be a good choice. I think Tommy would make a good coach but don't think he would want to do it. DJ or even Chief could be a possibility. DJ is defensive minded and Chief would know how to coach the bigs but maybe would have more of a problem with the PGs but it was mentioned when he came to work for the Celtics that he was interested in coaching. The best one would be Bird but he would never do it. Rick Carlisle is a good coach but he is wrapped up in Indy. Ainge would be better than Doc. Actually just about anyone would be better than Doc. Cowens hasn't had much success as a head coach. I would rather have DJ I think.
Chris Ford was a good coach back in the early 90's. Wonder if he would want to come back. I would have loved to get Nellie but he is spoken for. Max could coach if he wanted to leave the broadcast booth.

FL, you mention Cousy. Does he have the desire to coach? I've never heard of his name being mentioned as a coaching prospect all these years he's been retired, but its intriguing to think about.

Cooz is pretty old to handle the grind of being a head coach, especially since he hasnt done it in about 40 years.

Cousy has never mentioned that he wants to coach and may not want those headaches at his age. But I think he would do a good job. He knows what needs to be done and I think he could get the team to do it. But no, I don't think he would want to. That was just my wishful thinking as to who would be good.

Would be nice if he could step in and be our PG coach. We are banking on both Telfair and Rajon to lead the way at Point for the next decade, so getting someone who can show these guys the right way to play is a high priority, IMO.

Cousy has been very outspoken on the broadcast these past 3 games and is obviously unhappy with what he sees. He has mentioned our alleged transition game and also made a comment to the effect of "what are they doing out there?" He has been critical of the rotations and of the lack of a running game as well as the lack of defense. he obviously doesn't like what he sees out there. Maybe his Celtics' Pride will get the best of him and he will volunteer to help.
