Rudy Gobert (Jazz) tested positive for COVID19 and the league announced that the season is suspended after tonight's games. Not sure what will happen next but for now, no more games will be played for awhile.

Total overreaction to someone catching a version of the flu. The only people who are st any risk are people who are over 60 with pre existing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or smokers. For everyone else it is a runny nose and a caugh.
The normal strand of the flu that we have a vaccine for still has killed thousands of people this year.

I think it's the right call.
It's a bit jarring though. Never thought this type of thing would happen.

I agree. The right call. This is not the flu. Experts estimate it's 10x as lethal as flu among those who get infected, and it appears to be more contagious than flu as well. Remember, it's not just about us. It's about everyone we come in contact with, and everyone they come in contact with, and on and on. Unless we're fine with having thousands of older and sicker people die prematurely, we can do our part to slow down the spread of this new disease.

Mitchell is another confirmed case. Did they catch it at all-star weekend?
This is definitely for real. My manager at work was inquiring about the "work from home" plan today, and I was thinking about that yesterday myself.

Unless we're fine with having thousands of older and sicker people die prematurely, we can do our part to slow down the spread of this new disease. 10X more than the flu? It has a 3% death rate at 4,971 deaths while the seasonal flu has killed 20k. Once again unless you are a senior citizen then it won't be anything other than a cold. I am not saying not to take it seriously but to act like this is the plague and the media pushing hysteria is irresponsible on their part. It fits the line the Joker had in the dark knight about everything following a plan.A truck of soldiers get killed...nobody cares....a group of refugees get killed...nobody cares...but kill one mayor or in this case one NBA player catches Caronavirus and everyone loses their mind. Here's a quote from the CDC...sorry can't make it pretty as I am on my phone. The facts don't back up the hysteria unless you are over 60. Then they need to isolate themselves until it passes next month. And we will have a vaccine by the time it comes back next flu season. Still, the death rate for COVID-19 appears to vary by location and an individual's age, among other factors. For instance, in Hubei Province, the epicenter of the outbreak, the death rate reached 2.9%; in other provinces of China, that rate was just 0.4%, according to the China CDC Weekly study. In addition, older adults have been hit the hardest. The death rate soars to 14.8% in those 80 and older; among those ages 70 to 79, the COVID-19 death rate in China seems to be about 8%; it’s 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69; 1.3% for 50 to 59; 0.4% for the age group 40 to 49; and just 0.2% for people ages 10 to 39. No deaths in children under 9 have been reported.

Seasonal flu has a mortality rate of approx .1%
COVID-19 has a mortality rate of several times higher. It's estimated at 1% for the overall population, with some demographics several times higher than that. So yes, 10X higher than the flu accurately reflects the best estimates of the scientific community.
No one knows whether this virus will be slowed by warmer weather. Some viruses are. Others aren't. This one is so new that no one really knows. We have cases in Australia (their summer) and Hawaii. Do we know where they were infected?
Vaccines usually take at least a year to develop, test and make available to the public. Maybe we can do better this time, but we can't assume that we will. Some aspects of the process can't be rushed.

I do not think the public has been told all the facts. Question - why a new virus now?

I heard a biologist talking on WEEI radio (Boston) yesterday morning. He was saying that they've definitively determined that the virus came from a bat species. I haven't heard whether they know how it jumped from bats to humans, other than that in that part of the world animals and humans live in closer proximity than we're used to in the West. I'm not sure we'll ever know that part of the story.

On another topic I am proud of the players and owners who pledging money to help the people who work at the stadiums to supplement the lost wages from the shutdown.
Two names that are suspiciously not willing to this point to help are LeBron and Kerr who are the two biggest (fake) virtue signalers in the league. They should use some of that mk key China pays them and give it to the people who are not working because of China's irresponsibility in handling this virus in the first place.

No. This is a significant thing. If you are over 80 your chance of dying is about 20%. That's a lot. If you are over 60 it's like 1 in 30. How many Boomers do you know? I know tons. I don't feel like 1 in every 30 of them dying.
For younger people it's less than 1%. It's like .2%. That's not great. I live in a community with about 16K people. Let's say half of them get it. Let's say half of those people are youngish. So out of 4000 young people in my community about 80 would die. I don't feel like having a year where 80 young people in my community die in addition to the higher numbers of the older people. My community hospital has 20 ICU beds.
This is a very serious problem and we aren't do enough about it. There's a reason all of Italy is on shut down.

I read an article yesterday that made a lot of sense to me. Paraphrased, the virus is from bats, similar to SARs, which originated in a wet market in Wuhan, China. Customers wanted "warm meat", which meant meant bats were alive, then killed right before serving. I could easily see how the virus jumped from bats to humans, because the virus was not dead before serving.

As of today, April 3, 2020, I do not think we will see any resumption of the 2019-2020 NBA season. No more regular season games and no playoffs. We're going to be lucky, IMO, to get the 2020-2021 season off in October. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm hearing it's not completely impossible to have some playoffs in the summer but multiple things have to align.
One is widespread affordable fast reliable testing. It seems maybe possible this could be available by June.
I personally think another needed thing is meds that give you a decent chance if you get sick.
It would also be nice if the summer chased away the disease and we were seeing few cases.
The odds of all this happening seem a little low to me.
