Now that we have a better idea of what we have, it’s a bit clearer to project this team’s success.
First of all, unless Tatum nose dives with a season long slump, there’s little reason to doubt that the trio of Kemba-Hayward-Tatum will carry this team offensively. Kemba is going to score in Brad’s system the way all scoring guards have flourished under Brad. Hayward is back — the only reason why he won’t put up big numbers is because we have lots of weapons on this team. The confidence is there, as is his game. Tatum will need to find his spots to take over the scoring load, and I feel good that he’ll figure it out this time.
The main supporting cast will be Jaylen Brown, Enes Kanter and Marcus Smart. All three of these guys are capable of putting up 15 - 20 pts when the situation is right. Jaylen’s improved handles has helped diversify his dribble penetration, and like Tatum, he’s looking to get to the rim more often. Kanter’s low post offense will be used off the bench, and he should win his matchups against backup Centers. Smart has been playing smarter, and shooting better. He’s come a far ways from the low percentage chucker he was earlier in his career.
The next group of players is where we’llmfind out if we’re contenders or pretenders. If this group outperforms expectations, we’re the deepest team in the league, and the most dynamic by far.
Daniel Theis, Robert Williams, Grant Williams and Vincent Poirier.
Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters.
Already, the 4 rookies in this group display a veteran like attitude, and play hard and the right way. I’m hesitant about RWill, in spite of his massive potential. Still looked lost defensively, and this was during preseason against poor competition. I think Theis will do a decent enough job starting games. Guys like Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic will give most Centers a hard time, and Theis will most likely struggle against them. But against the rest of the NBA, Theis should be serviceable. I much rather have Theis than Olynyk or Tyler Zeller — and Brad made those guys look somewhat decent defensively (and Theis is a much better defender than either of them). Grant Williams is mature beyond his years, and learns on the fly. His 3pt shot is coming around nicely to go along with his smart defensive positioning. I’m looking for him to be a plus whenever he steps on the court.
Carsen Edwards will have moments like IT4, when he’s on fire and everytime he touches the ball, no matter where he is on the floor and no matter who’s guarding him, he’s going to get his shot off and nail it. We just have to hold back our frustration when he’s cold.
I have a feeling at some point Tremont will take over for Wanamaker. Tre is much better at running the Point and creating plays for others, and might even free Smart from PG duties too. Plus, he’s a defensive pest, which Brad loves.
Romeo probably stays in the D-League, working on his new shooting form and how to be a better fascilitator.
If all components of this team work together like a clock, we can beat any team — I really believe this. But it’s more likely that we have too many chinks in our armor, due to inexperience. If that’s the case, we’re looking at the 3rd or 4th seed.
