That was ugly, and I'm sick just watching it. Hoping your recovery will go better than expected. Come back strong next year.

No one player is going to replace the total package that Hayward offered. A bunch of players need to step up and produce.
Marcus Morris, now's your time to show what you can do.
Smart and Rozier, time to ramp up your production.
Tatum, you have a unique opportunity to play a key role on a team trying to make a run in the playoffs.

Expectations have to be lowered now. The only positive that could come of this is accelerating the development of the young players who will be getting the 30+ minutes per game that Gordon was going to play.
I just hope he can fully recover. The broken ankle will probably be fine. I'm more concerned about torn ligaments.

Hopefully it was just bone.

Really concerned, like jmost said, not only about the bone but the ligaments/tendons. It will take time to trust that ankle again and attach the rim like he did on that play. What a terrible start for him as I am sure he was enjoying reuniting with Stevens and playing for such a storied franchise.
This year may have just become all about player development, which is such a shame with all the excitement and high-hopes. But I can't see a Finals run with that big a piece out of the lineup. Tatum got a lot of minutes tonight, will probably be a pattern, at least until Morris comes back.
Probably also makes a trade involving our remaining potential lottery pick less likely -- no real sense being in win-now mode when it is already more like wait-until-next-year

I was expecting at worse tonight a loss, not Hayward done in 5-minutes (and a loss). This season is over.

Jaylen and Tatum seem up to the challenge set forth by coach Brad. They're starting, playing lots of minutes, playing during key moments of the game, being counted on to play defense and rebound, and they both did an admirable job against CLE. With Morris set to be in the mix soon, we might be able to survive the loss of Hayward.

I am waiting to see how long he will be out for. It all depends on how much soft tissue damage was done. If it was just a small break, he will be back before the playoffs, that is the only positive to this situation. It will give the two young guys a chance to mature and then we can possibly add Heyward towards the end of the regular season for a playoff run. If it was going/have to happen, then opening night was the best time. We will know for sure after his surgery tomorrow, until then I am not going to speculate how long he will be out as the team hasn't said anything officially yet.

Word is coming out that it was a dislocated ankle and a clean break on the fibula. The doctor who was interviewed by Mike Gorman said usually after 6-8 weeks, they have people rehabbing from this kjnd of injury. I don't know if I'd risk bringing Hayward back for the postseason, no matter how good Gordon may look and feel.

That puts his rehab starting in December, I don't see why he wouldn't come back by the end of the season. It isn't college where he can medically redshirt and keep a year of eligibility. If he is healthy, then he should play, if he isn't, then save him for next year, but I don't see why he wouldn't be healthy way before playoff time if what you heard is the case.

When I saw the angle of his foot I immediately thought his season was over, but now maybe there is some hope he can play this year - which is much better than I dared hope for. If he's medically cleared to play sometime in March or April, there's no more risk in playing him than waiting until next year. Guys who have gone through major leg injuries all say that the thing that takes the longest is not the physical healing, but trusting your body again. Might as well get through that part this year.

I don't think the season is over. We have too many guys with heart on this team to just give up. Whether Gordon comes back or not, I still think the Celtics will finish either 1st or second in the East. I can see Tatum and Brown developing much quicker now and that is going to help not only this season but next season also. I also see the other young guys pitching in and getting better with added minutes and motivation.

Seriously, we've got to give Yabu a scarier name. I mean, c'mon, we already had a Big Baby. Don't these big guys have any sort of ego?
