They've been accumulating high draft picks for years now. Noel Nerlens, Jahlil Okafor, Dario Saric, Ben Simmns, Joel Embiid, and they have the 3rd pick this year.
Some of those guys have franchise changing ability, and if they reach their potential, the 76ers will be a darn scary team.
But on the flipside, if they don't reach their potential, then the 76ers have wasted all those years tanking for nothing -- and they will continue to be bad. Noel has since been traded, Okafor has been on the chopping block for a couple of years now (and no takers, it seems), Embiid is a big man who has had 2 stress facture surgeries ALREADY (which could be a sign of death for big men), and Ben Simmons is set to be a passing Forward -- but if he can't shoot the ball, that handicaps his stardom. So far, only Dario Saric has been able to shine and show that he's a piece to build around.
With the 3rd pick this year, they most likely have Josh Jackson, Jayson Tatum or DeAron Fox to choose from. They may be good, but they'll miss out on Fultz, who most say is the closest to transcendent of the draftees, and Ball.

They got little for Noel, and no one wants Okafor, so that's another miss. I can't think of a single player in NBA history who missed his first two entire seasons, only played 31 in his third, and then went on to have a successful career. So while Embiid looked very good when he played, I wouldn't bet on him.
Still, assuming Simmons is ok, with Saric, the third pick, and more picks coming in future drafts, they could be very good. I can't remember a team where you could make just as good a case for them being terrible as being great.

And odds are against them that their young players will turn into stars. Just because a player is drafted high, doesn't equate to stardom. They've had many high draft picks, and none (as of now) are trending in that direction.
Yeah, Embiid, sad to say cause I've been a fan since he debuted at Kansas, doesn't look like he'll have a long career. 2 surgeries already for stress fractures in his foot is not something to overlook. If you have a broken thumb, you can overlook that. If you break your nose, you can overlook that. But Embiid will have to use his feet extensively on EVERY SINGLE MOVE he makes!! There's no way you can baby that, or avoid adding stress to it.

Their future is still very bright, though it would've been a lot brighter if the Lakers' pick would've fallen out of the top three. But they have the Lakers unprotected 2018 and Sacto's unprotected 2019 pick. Those are very valuable.
There future is not very clear yet. Can Imbiid stay healthy? How good can Simmons be? Can they bring in some talent with their cap space? Lots of questions. But man oh man, do they have talent. They could be looking at a frontcourt of Imbiid, Dario Saric, Simmons, Josh Jackson and Richard Covington (I assume they'll resign him). That is nuts. They just need to make something work at the guard position. I wouldn't be shocked to see them throw a 4 year max deal at Kyle Lowry. Also, one of the reasons I wouldn't mind trading Avery Bradley is because I can see Philly making him a gargantuan offer. They dude would the perfect fit on that roster. And they'd have the cap space to make it work.

Man, picking Okafor over Krisnaps has to be a tough pill for them to swallow. That team would be insane with Krisnaps on it.

Remember that Philly is going to play Simmons as the PG, so whatever guards they signed to be starters probably would not be traditional playmaking PGs. They might be better off looking for the type of "PGs" that the Bulls had playing with Jordan - guys who were more shooters than playmakers (Armstrong, Paxson, Kerr).

That's why I think Bradley is the perfect match for them. He's a great off the ball shooter, and he does a fine job defending PGs. And since Simmons will handle the PG duties, AB can just shoot jumpers on the offensive end.
And despite Simmons being there, I could still see them going after Lowry. He's a hometown kid, and philly could use a veteran splash in the worst way. and having him would take some pressure off simmons. and simmons would be starting his ascension just as Lowry hit his mid-30s years. And Lowry has a good enough outside jumper that he can effectively play off the ball.

That said, If Toronto even comes to close to matching any FA offer I'm guessing he stays there. Dude has a good thing going up in Toronto.

Trending downward. Solid free agents want to join a winning organization. Each draft selection will have to be re-upped just about the same time, which means their current salary cap freedom will fall as well.

Yup, that team is going to spend lots of money to keep everyone together. Hard decision to make long term on Embiid.

Was just looking at Embiid's numbers. So sick. Dude averaged 20ppg 8rpg 2.5blg in 25mpg in his rookie season. And he shot 37% from deep. Unreal. He is gonna be ridiculous if he can ever find a way to stay healthy.

I don't think small sample size matters in basketball like it does in baseball. You don't average 20 and 8 on a fluke. The dude is a monster. That said, those feet are scary. He needs to find the doctor that fixed up Zydrunas Ilgauskas' feet. That dude's career looked to be over at age 25 then he somehow magically became and iron and played well into his mid 30s.

Might be small sample size because teams will study him and figure out how to defend him.
But I don't doubt that Embiid is for real. If his foot injuries are behind him, he's a top 3 Center.
