The new CBA might make it harder for the Celtics to get another star via free agency. One of the new provisions of the CBA is that teams will be able to offer two designated players who meet certain conditions that include All-NBA team, Defensive Player of the Year, All Devensive team, MVP and some others six-year deals, rather than the maximum length of five under the old CBA. They can either give their own free agent a straight six-year contract or extend a player currently under contract to a total of six. Teams can also offer five-year extensions to two players coming off rookie contracts. The old CBA allowed them to do that with just one player.
Stars will get offers they can't refuse from their current teams and get locked up by them to big contracts and then won't hit the free agent market. If this was in place this last off season, it's possible that neither Horford or Durant would have been free agents. There will probably be fewer stars that the Celtics can target in free agency with more stars opting for the 6 year max contracts that the Celtics won't be able to offer.
This development will make the Nets picks even more valuable because the Celtics may have to lean more on the draft and developing their young guys instead of looking to free agency to build. Of course there could be some trades to snag a disgruntled star like Cousins. But, also, just as the Nets picks would be more valuable if Danny wants to build through the draft, they can also be much more valuable as trade chips should one of those big trades But this new CBA may cause Danny to have to rethink his direction for the next step in the rebuild.
The new CBA also proposes to increase the rosters from 15 to 17, with the 16th and 17th spots for players that can be on the D-League team and would allow them to get lesser pay when on the D-league team and when moved to the parent club, get a pay increase. But the D-league pay scale will also be increasing under the new CBA also so players may be more apt to play there than go overseas. If this were in effect this year, Yabusele and Zizic probably would be with the Red Claws and available to the Celtics rather than playing overseas.
What are your thoughts on this new CBA and the changes that may affect the Celtics?
