Woj says that Danny is seeing if he can trade Hunter or Young for a 2nd rounder (and as a reminder, both were first round picks).
Doesn't seem like there's much value in them.
So really, we are talking about which of them will take the 15th spot on the roster, and whoever does will not see any playing time (will most likely be Maine bound), and they are possible roster cuts anyways when we add players from next year's draft.
I'm surprised that Hunter's value is that low.
To spin it positively, that means we've increased our talent base, where a guy like Hunter can barely make the team (if he does).

I don't know as it matters - Danny said that he's looking to trade either Young or Hunter for a 2nd round pick and didn't seem to indicate one over the other.
I'm not sure which one I'd pick if I had to. Hunter seems to be the more rounded player and I think would help the team more this season. Young seems to have a higher upside but still doesn't seem to fully get it after 2 years as he seemed to get lost on defense a few times in the preseason. The light may go one and he may suddenly get it or he may take several years if then. That's the hard part about going on potential.
If I HAD to make the decision today, I guess I'd keep Hunter. He seems to be more aware on the court. But then there was that diving out of bounds save by Young... Oh my! I can't decide.

I don't know if I see higher upside in James Young, in comparison to RJ Hunter.
Hunter is a much better ball handler, is much savvier, is a slightly better finisher, has better court vision and sense, can pass better.
Where I see Young having an upperhand is he's younger than Hunter, and he's a greater 3pt threat when he's hot.
But that's about it.
Like you, I'd much rather hold onto Hunter.

Has Young run out of NBDL eligibility unlike RJ H?

I will say I think Young is the better rebounder, but that's a small thing. Part of Danny's problem is that everyone knows he has to release someone, so why would they give up something when they can get it for nothing next week?

It is highly unlikely, but if there were multiple teams interested in Young, and don't want to take a chance of him signing with another team, someone may trade with Danny just to secure Young from going anywhere else. But I don't think that'll be the case. Eja, I'm not sure what the ramifications are for the eligibility of NBDL players. Didn't think about it until you mentioned it. Fresh, do you know?

According to what I have found players with under three years of service can be assigned an unlimited number of times each season so Young has had just 2 years in the league and so would be eligible for D-League assignments this year.
Also, I think the 3 that were waived other than Bentil plus Kelly are going to be affiliate players. The “affiliate player rule” allows each team to retain up to four of the players that they waive from training camp as affiliate players. Players designated by an NBA team as affiliate players are automatically allocated to that team’s NBA Development League affiliate if they choose to sign an NBA D-League contract. Affiliate players remain free agents available for any of the 30 NBA teams to sign. but it’s an indication of which players NBA teams are interested in developing, allowing front offices to closely monitor certain players on and off the court, keep them within the same offensive and defensive systems using the same terminology and many of the same plays, and work on their skills with their own coaches.

A second round pick isn't much to give up. I remember when teams used to sell them. Or trade them for cash and future consideration.

Well, the brass decided to keep Young and waive Hunter.
It's not that Young earned the spot, maybe more like Hunter didn't play well enough, or show enough to warrant cutting Young.
I liked Hunter, but admit that he just didn't step up his game. He didn't rise to the occasion.

Frankly, I was shocked Danny kept Young over Hunter. Maybe age, potential, or draft spot was a determining factor.

Future trade chip if he develops into a rotation player.
