In a recent interview with Scott Souza, Brad Stevens said while he coached at Butler, what he looked for when recruiting big men was how well they defended the pick and roll.
This explains why we Amir is on the team and why Sully isn't (well, there are other factors too). This also is one reason why Horford was a huge free agent target for us.
Also explains why we went after Yabusele and Zizic -- both big men can move laterally and defend the pick and roll.
Maybe this is why we haven't (as of yet) traded for Jahlil Okafor.
Plus, Ainge said that they want 2 way players; those who can contribute, and not be a liability, on offense and defense. Maybe that's why we haven't (as of yet) traded for Nerlens Noel.

Thanks Darren. I read the article and was amazed at what journalists do to write a story. It starts out well but the later paragraphs were contradictory.. He seems to be a high intensity person who does his best. The article says.. Boston had issues with the pick and roll but we can't blame all that on Zeller..
To me its a stat trying to tell you that you what your eyes see is not real..

Yeah, I don't agree that Zeller has much impact on defense -- but that's just based on what my eyeballs see; not really what the stats say.
But I think Zeller is still here because he's a mobile 7 footer, and a serviceable backup.

I think he's here because he is a decent offensive player as is olynyk..
Which leads me to believe that ainge doesn't really value defense and rebounds.. Block shots.. He is fascinated with Dimitri kristichs..

I wouldn't say that Danny doesn't value defense and rebounds. He has drafted players like Sully and Mickey whose strengths are those very things. Sully was allowed to leave not because Danny doesn't value his rebounding and defense - but because he couldn't stay in shape.
I think Zeller was brought back because of his willingness to do whatever is asked of him. He never complained about his role and rarely made mistakes when he was on the court. There is value in those qualities in a role player.

Mickey has a good wingspan and is a decent outside shot?
If bill Russell was in this years draft where would he be taken?, dude can't hit three pointers..
Sully was a decent offensive player..
I don't see any inclination to making this a true defensive team.at the 5 position.
Al is a good offensive player. Defensively has one weakness. He will get pushed around.
We drafted Bradley and smart and you could add brown who were defensive players with potential offense.. So if we value a big tough dominant center where have we drafted one or traded for one?

Defense is not only about blocking shots.
If you re-read the opening post, Brad looked for big men who moved well laterally on defense to defend the pick and roll.
With that in mind, Mickey moves well laterally. Yabusele is quick on his feet. Zizic also moves decently laterally for a big man. Al is terrific on pick and roll defense. So is Amir.

I read the article and I thought it was poorly written. To me defense is a complete package. Yes you have to have that lateral quickness , but its all about desire and intensity.. You have to fight through picks , rebound.. Make those feet move..
What really bothers me is that sully was constantly maligned about his lack of conditioning etc but he managed to be a good rebounder.. Only big on the team who was.. And rebounding is as essential to defense as is any aspect of defense..

I'm sure Stevens looks for many things in his big men. But what was singled out is a big man's ability to defend the pick and roll. That is a big thing in today's game, but not the only thing obviously.
That is why Horford is such a good grab.
