2 years ago, the Hawks won 60 games. Last year they won 48. Since Budenholzer took over, the Hawks have been seen as a team on the upswing.
They have a good coach They had star players (Milsap, Horford, Teague) Solid role players (Carroll, Korver, Sefolosha, Bazemore) Played excellent defense Had a really good offense
But yet, they were never true contenders. Why? What were they missing?
What about this team -- what pieces are we missing to be true title contenders?
We got a good head coach, we have star players, we have excellent role players, we play excellent defense, and have a solid offense.
I know we are missing a pure three point shooter. Maybe a big time shot blocker. Another big scorer, maybe?

while they had very good players, they didn't have a transcendent star. I love me some Al Horford, but he'd only be the 3rd or 4th best player on the Warriors, and depending on what you think of Kyrie, he'd prolly only be the third best player in Cleveland. They just didn't have the talent to compete with the truly elite teams.

I think they were not really a team. I agree that there talent level isn't the same as GS or Cleveland. I don't think the coaching staff or systems were superior. Playoff basketball is another level. Your facing all very good teams. Teams with coaches who know how to expose weakness's..
And I also question heart.. Desire..GS had more talent but Cleveland showed more heart.. And I question Al's heart and will to succeed.

No superstars. I'm not sure they were that great on defense.
If you don't have any gold medal guys then you better have a ton of ...whatever comes after bronze. That's what we have now. We have two silver guys and a ton of guys right after bronze. A huge hope is for a young guy like Jaylen, Smart, or Rozier to hit bronze and soon.

I still kick myself for not buying a Celtics Eric Montross jersey that was sitting on a discount rack in a sporting goods store in Minot, North Dakota. I'd still be wearing that thing to do this day.

That's cool that Eric has 2 passionate fans..
He was a ok player.. Who was the big 7 footer that Atlanta gave the big contract to at that time? And was at best a role player.

Offense was their bread and butter, but they also ranked in the top 10 in most defensive metric stats.

He was pretty much a zero offensively. But he was big and strong and a decent rebounder, and Atlanta got conned into waaaaay overpaying for him. At least Jim McLavaine could block shots.

Ok, so based on what we know about the Hawks, what are the pieces we need in order that we move into contender status that they couldn't reach?
