For you resident capologists, if we stay the course and not make any major moves this summer or at the trade deadline in February, what kind of moves will we be able to make next summer?

Here's my goto website on salaries: www.basketballinsiders.com/boston-celtics-team-salary/We are committed to $55.2 million next year. (Horford, Bradley, Thomas, Crowder, and Brown) Team option on Smart ($4.5 million), Rozier ($2 million), Young ($2.8 million), Hunter ($1.2 million). So let's figure we keep the first two for $6.5 million. That brings us up to $61.7 million, with Hunter up in the air. Qualifying offer on Olynyk is $4.3 million. If he shows enough for us to want to keep him, he'll probably get other offers too, so who know how much he'd actually cost. The rest of the guys are non-guaranteed. And then there's Yabusele and Zizic, who would be slotted for $1.6 and $1.2 million. So we can add it all up and get to around $64.5 million for Horford, Bradley, Thomas, Brown, Crowder, Smart, Rozier, Yabusele and Zizic. Hunter would cost another $1.2 and who knows for Olynyk. The cap is expected to be $102 million - actually lower than this coming year. I think the rules for 2017-18 allow a player to be paid 35% of the cap, say $35 million. So we have enough room to sign any max free agent. There are 3 tiers of max salary depending on years in the league (1-6, 7-9, 10 or more). The longer in the league, the higher the max salary allowed. We could conceivably pay 2 max guys if they weren't yet in the second tier. Hope that helps.

Check out this page: www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q16 for a description of the tiers based on years in the league. I don't have a list of who is available next Summer in each tier.

JMost, thanks for your helpful post.
We may need to bring back Amir if he has another solid season and we have success with him playing next to Horford.
Next year's free agency has some big names, but they'll be hard to go after
Steph Curry Kevin Durant Chris Paul Blake Griffin
Next level players Giannis Antetokuonmpo Gordon Hayward Kyle Lowry Paul Mislap Jeff Teague Serge Ibaka
We're going to need our youngsters to replace some of our older, pricier players (Jerebko, Olynyk, Zeller). If Zizic, Yabusele and Bentil can replace them, we'll save some money there.

You're welcome, DERRENMATTS. I think our best bet for free agents next year will be a guy who hasn't won a title, doesn't see his team winning one, and is ready to go somewhere he thinks has a shot in the next few years - and of course can afford him. What the Celtics need to do is 1) Keep improving 2) Win a round or, preferably, two, in the playoffs, and 3) Get lucky in the 2017 Draft Lottery. I think if we can do those things, we have a shot at coaxing another All-Star to Boston. If Smart and Brown show they're going to be good that'll help a lot.

There's already a lot of talk about Hayward wanting to come to Boston to play for his former coach. Antetokuonmpo is an athletic freak. He's like 7 foot and they had him playing point guard.
I agree jmost. We need to win a round or two in the playoffs to show improvement and that we could be contenders. We need to keep up with the team style of play that they had last year. "We are one superstar" even if they get a star they need to continue to play that way. It's much more fun to watch than hero ball. And we need our young guns to improve and maybe even become a star in their own right. Luck in the lottery (something we have NEVER had) would be helpful too.

I can't see any way Milwaukee lets Giannis leave. He's a restricted FA, so I'm guessing Milwaukee will match any offer for him. Still wish we would've taken him in the 2013 draft instead of Olynyk. Dude is a physical freak.

I thought one reason for the brown pick is Danny didn't want to let another Kobe mistake..

I don't think that's quite fair because at least Kelly has proven he can at least be a rotation player in the NBA. Michael Smith was complete garbage that had no business playing in the NBA. I'd love to know what Red saw in him that made him think he was worth spending that draft pick on.

Yes I should go back and look at his stats but his "upside" was he was the next Larry bird..Did I recall that correctly? I am old..
I hope Kelly olynyk is valuable.. I see potential there. If he was the only big softie we had I might appreciate him more.. But I don't recall anyone saying Kelly was the next.....
