There is a good article on CSN about how we can figure out what the Celtics are up to by looking at their actions. Their rookies are still unsigned and they still haven’t made a decision on Tyler Zeller. That keeps them in position to make a potential blockbuster trade.
If they start signing rookies and offer Zeller a new contract, then you know they have given up on a blockbuster trade. By holding off, they give themselves flexibility. The Zeller situation is interesting. He has sat and watched most of the free agents sign for unreal money this summer. Moreso than waiting for the Celtics to work out a bigger contract with him, he could be staying open to a potential sign-and-trade scenario that’d pay him a lot of money.
Remember when Keith Bogans was signed to a $5 million contract so he could be included in a trade to make the numbers work? Zeller could be waiting for that same kind of thing. A sign and trade for much more than he might get otherwise to make the number work would be better than his 3.7 million offer sheet.
So the fact that none of the rookies, including Jaylen Brown, have been signed and so until you see Danny starting to sign them or working something out with Zeller, then Danny is still hoping for a blockbuster trade and keeping his options open.

Good points. Gotta keep the cap flexible in order to be available for a blockbuster trade.
And that's why our name keeps surfacing in trade rumors. Ainge is trying to make a splash -- but he's being smart about it.

I would rather Danny be patient than give up too much in a trade. He has a handicap in trying to make a trade in that everyone knows how badly he fleeced the Nets and no one wants to be his victim. I'm sure when he finds a trade that he feels isn't one sided where he doesn't have to give up young players in our core or maybe it's the 17 Nets pick he doesn't want to give up and a trade where he feels that we get the better or it or at least even, then he'll make it. At least I hope he waits for a good trade. If he doesn't find one I'd rather stand pat. Play out next year. play and evaluate the young guys and give them a year to grow and go at Free agency next year.
