I bring this up because this is the only reason why I can think we'd ever consider moving Jae Crowder.
This is not about does Jaylen have the potential to be better than Crowder, because the answer of course is yes. He has tons more natural talents and basketball skills (though raw yet) to be a greater player than Crowder will ever be.
But is it likely, are the chances good, that Jaylen will be able to one day (and hopefully soon) eclipse Crowder and what he brings to our table?
Because if there's a good chance that he can, then that's the only way I can live with parting ways with Jae Crowder.

i'm of the "bird in the hand" mindset. We have Jae now who is a great defender and can play and defend 4 positions and maybe even 5. Who knows? Does Jaylen have the potential to be even better? Probably. Will he? Who knows? We have seen so many players taking early in the draft who had the potential to be something great but never got there. I'd want to give Jaylen a year to show if he was going to live up to his potential before getting rid of Jae.

JB had 20 pts, 10 rebs today in his best showing so far. He and Rozier went to the line 35 times between them!
I like Crowder. Mostly his toughness. But I don't want to go overboard about how great he is. He's a nice complementary player, but not a star. Good defender, but not like a Pippen, and decent 3 point shooter. No doubt he, Smart and Bradley are the defensive soul of this team, but any one of them is expendable I think.
I saw someone on the Suns (A. Williams) had a triple double: 18 pts, 10 rebs, 10 fouls. Gotta love summer league.

Plus, I think Crowder's upcoming contract might play a part in whether we trade him or not.

Plus, I think Crowder's upcoming contract might play a part in whether we trade him or not. Crowder is locked in for 4 more years at just $7 million a year. That's a bargain. He's under contract until 2020. Just signed it before this past year started.

I stand corrected.
JMost, you are right -- Crowder's status among certain Celtics fans is overblown. I make him out to be a star player, when in fact he isn't. But he is what I want all our players to be like -- tough, passionate, all business, lay it all out every game. That's why I appreciate him so much.
But yes, he is expendable. I'd shed a tear, though.

I still shed tears when I think about Danny trading Perk. I get attached LOL. Jae is versatile and tough and like Derren said, he's what we want all our players to be. I like his versatility the most. He gives Brad a lot of options and that is valuable to have on a team. Also he is locked up until 2020 at just 7 million a year. That's a bargain!!

I dont see a reason to trade Crowder. Call me optimistic but I see Crowder in the same mold as Draymond Green. A defensively versatile player who is better suited to today's NBA game where power forwards can be smaller players at his height yet have the ability to guard nearly all positions. He is the sort of player you NEED as part of a contending core because he can handle the defensive needs of the postseason whilst also providing offensive bursts. I certainly hope Jaylen picks up the 3 spot quickly and we should be more than fine to have Crowder man the 4 spot with Horford at the 5. What we really need is for Jaylen to improve his 3 pt stroke so we can spread things out abit more.

Crowder is such a value with that contract of his. I love the dude, but I wouldn't be surprised if in 2 or 3 years brown surpasses him. Let's hope that happens, because that would mean brown has turned out to be a very good player.

And if that's the case, then Crowder becomes James Posey 2.0. Championship teams need players like that.
BTW, Jaylen showed me good things in tonight's game. He played with more aggression and urgency. His shots still aren't falling, but was nice seeing him get free from his man, enough to get off a good look at the basket.
When he's attacking and going down hill, his defender back pedals, giving Jaylen the upper hand. And with his quick first step, he can get pretty deep into the paint.
His problem right now is knowing what to do when he gets there; how to get off his shot in traffic.
Like Brad Stevens said, and like Brad Daugherty concurred, Jaylen needs to learn the game. Learn the intricacies.
