The Celtics have a nice team with rookies Jaylen Brown, Ben Bentil, Demetrius Jackson, Abdel Nader and Guershchon Yabusele. They also have second year players RJ Hunter, Jordan Mickey, Terry Rozier, and Marcus Thornton. James Young is playing in his third Summer League for the Celtics. They also have a couple of Red Claws and undrafted players. The Sixers feature the [HASH]1 draft pick, Ben Simmons, who is the early pick for rookie of the year. They also have second year players Richuan Holmes, TJ McConnell, and Christian Wood. One other first round pick, Timothe Luwawu, is listed as playing in the Vegas Summer League only and a third first round pick, Furkan Korkmaz of Turkey, is not listed on their roster. They also have a Levi Randolph, who played for the Celtics in training camp and for the Red Claws last season. Looking at the two rosters, we should see a lot of small ball. The Celtics tallest player is 6'9" tall and is the only center listed on the roster. Jordan Mickey is long and can play center and is listed at 6'8". For the Sixers, they have 6'10" Richuan Holmes and 6'11" Christian Wood but the other players are all 6'9" or shorter.
Players to Watch James Young is playing in his third Summer League. While it's not usual for 3rd year players to play in Summer League, Young has spent most of his first two seasons with the Celtics playing for the Red Claws. He has yet to prove that he can play on this level and so these games are very important for him.  Celtics fans were not happy on draft night when Danny didn't make a trade but instead chose Jaylen Brown with the third pick. Brown has vowed to prove that he is worth the third pick and will look to start winning over Celtics fans with Summer League. Honorable MentionGuerschon Yabusele The Celtics rookie has been described by coach Micah Shrewsberry as a Dancing Bear. He has great footwork in spite of his size. He also has a great 3 point shot. It will be interesting to see how he plays. Most assume that he will be a draft and stash pick but he may just play himself onto the team this season.  Ben Simmons was the much heralded first pick of the 2016 draft. He is already being discussed as the Rookie of the Year before playing a single game for the Sixers. We get our first look at him in this game.  Christian Wood is the tallest player on either team. He is entering his second season in the league having gone undrafted last season. He averaged 3.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.4 blocks last season. Honorable MentionLevi Randolph Randolph played for the Celtics in training camp last season and after being cut at the end of the preseason, he signed with the Red Claws and averaged 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season for them. Wonder who will guard Simmons?
Probably Jaylen, though gives up a few inches. Will be a good test to see how Brown does against high level competition.

Darn it! Jordan Mickey is out of tonight's game with an injured shoulder (which he received from blocking a shot in practice).
My conspiracy theory mind tells me this is just Ainge's way of hiding Mickey from the watchful eyes of GM's around the league who will want us to include Mickey in a trade package.

Yeah, Derren I can see Danny being sneaky like that. I was looking forward to seeing him too. Young looks to be shooting pretty well so far.

Celtics up 23-20 at the end of 1. Started off slow but then picked it up. Young 2-2 from beyond the arc. Looked good shooting it. Brown 0-3 but 5-6 from the line for 5 points and 4 rebounds.

I missed the vast majority of the game. How did Jaylen do? How did Rozier do? How did the French kid do? How did James Young do? Jackson? Bentil?

Ok, I'll start with the negatives.
James Young is far from being a contributor. I'll go on record and say he won't have a long career in the league. Though he's young, he's shown zero improvements in his game. His dribbling is below average, his body control is terrible, and just doesn't seem to know the game. He made a couple of three's early, but was non existent for most of the game.
RJ Hunter is another one may not stick. I expected more out of him, being a coaches son, but he makes poor decisions often (though he is capable of making good ones too). With his feet set, he can knock down three's, even from deep. And if he's driving under control, he can drop some floaters. But he doesn't make enough positive plays to make a case for him being an NBA player.
Jaylen Brown. He had some positives, but I'll start with the negatives. The major concern I had about him in the draft reared its ugly head tonight. Brown has the ability to put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket. But 1) he doesn't show much creativity at the rim, and 2) he'll make boneheaded offensive fouls by driving right into people.
The positives:
Ben Bentil. Did a good job in the flow of the offense. Capable of hitting perimeter shots, and driving hard to the basket when defenses bite. Also, I liked some of his rebounds.
Terry Rozier. I wish he was a selfish player because he has the ability to do a lot of damage if he chooses to. Hit some three's, had some nice drives to the basket, had impressive rebounds. Keep attacking young guy.
Jaylen Brown. Jumper was better than what scouting reports indicated. You can tell with his free throws that he's got a nice stroke. Gets to the line a lot because he draws a lot of contact.
Demetrius Jackson. Played like a vet. Good with the ball, keeps it away from defenders' hands. I want to see him take more perimeter shots.
Jury still out on Yabusele. IMO, doesn't utilize his natural strength and size. I didn't see him take any three's. He rushed a few putback attempts under the basket.

He can't shoot and cares more about his shoe contract than working on his game. People were really put off with his "I've arrived" attitude that he had at the draft. He's another guy that has been given a gift to play the game, but sounds like someone who will blow it because of an entitled attitude and lazy work ethic. |

Looking at the box scores some things stood out.
In no order
It looked like they did sorta some odd stuff. It looked like Gershon was done a major disservice playing him at center.
Looked like they sorta matched up Jaylen on Simmons and James Young on nobody I ever heard of....and if I haven't heard of you...
Despite being matched up with nobody James Young still can't get it done.
Jaylen needs to work on his shot but it doesn't seem broken.
Bentiil had an efficient game.
Terry Rozier was probably the best player on the floor. Personally I think he's ready to kick Smart to the curb and I'm totally serious.
RJ Hunter is very good shooter. I suspect he's an underrated defender. No assists.
Seemed like almost everyone had 6 rebs.
Is there no center on our team? We have to wait for Jordan Mickey?

Nah, I don't think he'll bust, but its debatable if he's a franchise player.
His feel for the game, his court vision and passing ability is outstanding. Makes right decisions very quickly. He's got a very quick first step, making him a threat to drive regularly. And he'll make lazer passes on his drives too.
He's not likely to bust because he has real tangible basketball skills that translates to the NBA. He's already able to think, move and react at the NBA level.
But whether or not he has a good jumper is what will ultimately determine if he'll be a star or not.

We are a short team to begin with, and Jordan Mickey got hurt. Someone had to play Center, and it's most likely going to be Yabu and Bentil. Yup, James Young just isn't getting it done. I'm done with him, actually. Jaylen missed shots, but most of them because he has trouble converting at the basket. He mostly drove to the basket tonight. Yeah, Bentil did lots of good things. He looked comfortable, and looked like he was better than his competition. Yes, Rozier was the best player, at least on our team. Even more, if he was more offensive minded, he could have scored 30. |

My first thought about Brown, was "Oh, no. His jumper looks just like Smart's". Tons of athleticism, but very, very raw. Won't be able to contribute offensively in the regular season other than on fast breaks - at least for a while.
Liked what I saw from Demetrius Jackson. Had to fire off a buzzer beater from just inside the arc and rose up nicely and hit it cleanly.
Hunter has almost unlimited range, hitting and showing confidence from 5 feet beyond the arc.
Am loving what I am seeing from Rozier. I think this kid has very high potential. Just needs reps and confidence.
