Yeah know, its really tough to put all your hopes of winning championships upon the decision of a superstar free agent to sign with your team, or a GM willing to trade you his superstar. Only 1 team will win the rights to such a superstar, while the other 29 teams have to find some other way.
We are trying to go that route with Kevin Durant. But there is another way -- draft high and pray a player develops into a superstar. And guess what? We're trying that route as well, simultaneously as we try to lure a superstar here!! Wow, imagine if we succeed at doing both??
So this year, with the 3rd pick, we took a high upside 19 year old. He has the physical tools to be a superstar, such as great athleticism, explosiveness, strength, quickness, fast twitch muscles, and a quick first step. As for his intangibles, he's got a smart head on his shoulders, he's mature, he doesn't get rattled, a hard worker, doesn't appear to be a troublemaker.
But of course, having these things are only part of what makes a superstar. You need actual basketball skills. So far, what Jaylen has are:
ball handling ability (of course, there's room for a lot of improvement)
attacking the basket
scoring in transition
pressure on defense
The million dollar question is his jump shot. Danny said he shoots the ball a lot better than his stats at CAL indicate, and he said he expects it to improve.
With Jaylen's physical tools, skills, and intangibles, if he can hone his jumper, and be a creative slasher (the latter 2 things are my concerns), then we may have a home grown superstar on our hands.
