What if the two max contracts turn out to be these guys?
I hope they aren't for more than 2 years.

Yeah, I entertained this thought too. For sure we'd be a dominant defensive team. Every position in the starting lineup, aside from PG (Isaiah Thomas) would be an average to above average defender (Avery, Crowder, Horford, Howard).
But the offense would stagnate.
Question is, would we be able to afford Durant the following offseason?

I just don't see that happening. I think it will be one or the other. Signing both would be redundant. I think we get one or the other and then they will look for a scorer as the other signing.
