Time is quickly running out for James Young. He's entering Year 3 of his rookie contract, and so far he hasn't done anything to even earn garbage time for the Celtics.
While last year's rookies, Terry Rozier and RJ Hunter played in 39 and 36 games, Young only played in 29 contests.
Of course, age is a factor, as James is only going to be 21 this August -- while RJ turns 23 in October, and Terry just turned 22 in March. But I haven't much improvements in Young's game since arriving in Boston as a 19 year old.
And while Rozier's duties are more diverse playing PG, Young's primary role is to knock down the 3, which he hasn't done well enough yet in the NBA (but has lit it up in the D-Leagues).
Having been picked 17th in the first round, we were hoping he'd turn out to be an all around scorer for us in the starting linenup. At this point, with his deficiencies on defense, and lack of contribution anywhere else on the court (doesn't pass well, doesn't rebound, poor ball handler) I'm hoping at least he'll be a 3 point specialist deep off the bench.
If he can't even give us this, I don't see him being on this team once his rookie contract expires.

I watched a clip of him recently, and, man does he have a sweet shot when he's relaxed and letting it flow. He'd be a nice weapon if he can ever harness it. I suspect it'll be either him or Hunter, but not both, who is around in October. My money is on Hunter, but a strong summer league on Young's part could get him back in the picture.

Yes, he does have a sweet stroke. When he's in rhythm, his shots fall in cleanly.
We really need sharp shooters (we're one of the worst in the league in 3 pt shooting %, and we shoot a lot of them). It will be huge if Young can hone his skill.
Hunter may have the upperhand because he's more versatile (which is the name of the game too). Hunter can handle the ball better and seems to have a better feel for the game.

Bust might be too harsh a word because no one expected greatness of him. But definitely did not do much.

So far he hasn't shown anything that would say keep him. He is especially lost on the defensive end. He needs to show a lot in Summer League or he should be gone one way or the other. RJ Hunter will be his replacement. Hunter showed a lot more on both ends in his first year than Young has in two years.

Wow, this is one of the rare times you haven't fallen in love with one of our kids, FL But you're right -- if Young doesn't showcase anything this year, he's on his way out.

Yeah, It's really rare that I'm not all in on our young guys and I fall hard. I just haven't seen the effort on Young's part to try to get better. Maybe it's a basketball IQ thing. But he should have improved more by this time if he was really working on it.

Wasn't that a knock on him his rookie season? I think it was Getald Wallace who said something to the effect that James Young wasn't putting forth the hard work, and didn't show the desire to learn and get better.

He often looks hesitant out there, like he's not sure what to do. the pro game definitely doesn't come naturally to him yet. if the switch ever flips on, i think he could still become a pretty solid nba player.

He reminds me a lot of Gerald Green. All the tools and yet something just didn't click. Green still has trouble on the defensive end even though he gets team play a lot more than he once did. The BB IQ just wasn't there with him and I don't see it in Young, especially on defense.
Hunter on the other hand seems to have great instincts and makes the right play more often than not. I think he will be what they hoped Young would be. Both will be on the Summer League team and maybe Young will show some improvement finally after two years but I'm not counting on it.
