What are your guys' thoughts on Marcus Smart as he heads into his 3rd year in the NBA?
Has he lived up to expectations, exceeded them, or fallen short, in your opinion?
Have you seen improvements in his game, or has it been not enough?
Is he expendable, or one of the last you'd want traded?

I'm still a big fan, but he is by no means untradeable. I'm hoping we can sign him to a reasonable extension after this year, and then he keeps improving, so his contract becomes a bargain.

I wonder if he's ever going to develop into a mid-teens scorer like many (including me) thought he would, but he's still a very good player. dude plays all world defense. he's like a tony allen with better passing abilities.

Well, he doesn't have very good PG skills yet, and he doesn't have very good SG skills yet, so, yes, he's a very strong defender, but I expected more out of a [HASH]6 pick. AB made 1st team all-defensive and is a much better offensive player than Smart, so if I have to pick one, I pick AB, who has gotten better every year. Among our PGs, he and IT are different animals, each bringing something entirely different. The other guys are all still largely unknowns. I actually believe Rozier could wind up being a better all-around player than Smart because he has a much better ability to get by his man, and, while neither has been a statistically good shooter, I like Rozier's form better. I had no idea who Demetrius Jackson was on draft night, but I've liked what I've seen in clips of him. I guess I just don't see where Smart fits in unless he becomes a so-called 3 and D guy, which will require a lot of improvement on the 3 part of it. And 3 and D guys don't merit huge salaries. From what I have heard, the rest of the league doesn't value Smart very highly either. If he were 3 inches taller and could slow down LeBron, I'd say he'd have more value, but as it stands, I'd trade him for anyone decent.

I feel he's limited as a player, but is a fierce competitor, especially on defense.
Was he worth the 6th pick? I would have expected more out of that draft slot, but when you look at the players who were taken after him, not many are doing much better. Maybe Zach Levine, who was picked at 13th, or Rodney Hood who went 23rd.

Yeah, the 5 through 15 picks have struggled more than i thought they would in that draft. I still think Dante Exum has a chance to special. Too bad we had to lose that coin flip with Utah. He could be a Celtic right now.

I like players who play tough defense because defense wins championships. So, I like Smart because his defense is excellent. As has been said, he has a lot to improve when it comes to point guard skills and his offense. But, he has already improved considerably and he has a strong work ethic and will improve more. Even with the need for improvements, Smart can change a game just by his presence on the court and that's valuable.

Does anyone have the figures that show the value Smart brings to the game when he's playing, vs the numbers of when he's sitting down?

I wasn't a Marcus fan from that draft, but Aaron Gordon and Dante Exum were already picked, and in hindsight, Julius Randle and Rodney Hood are the only ones who are doing anything impactful in the league.
Who else would Ainge have picked?

Marcus has said he is working hard on his shot this off season. I can see him coming back better than last season. He is also playing on the USA Select team and will gain some valuable experience there.

In hindsight Julius Randle, but that's only with hindsight. At the time I was fine with Smart and thought he was a better pick than Gordon

Who else would Ainge have picked? And I'd still rather have Smart than Randle. Randle is an absolute sieve on D. And his FG% was .428. Dude is gonna struggle scoring over bigs in the NBA. Basically his only calling card is rebounding.
