Raef and Blount cannot cut it defensively in the paint. Jefferson is still a big work in progress and Perkins doesn't have the natural instincts.
We are hurting without a big time rebounder and shot blocker.
Its rather an obvious sign when 3 guards are your top 5 rebounders (and this is including the 6'3" Delonte West) and when a second year player only playing in 17 minutes a game is your 3rd best rebounder.
Its hard to get into hot streaks when we don't get defensive stops. We just trade baskets, which results in close games. No matter how mcuh we score, we give up just as much.
Part of the reason why we give up so many points is because we allow too many open perimeter shots--and this is because we lack strong interior defense. Our wing players and PG's sag a lot to cover up our inabilities inside.
We also give up too many easy points in the paint. Raef and Blount are decent defensive players, but they just don't make much of an impact. We need a difference maker and an impact player--a guy who can control the paint and the boards single handedly.

If Perkins will not be the primary center, then who can you get? Who is out there? Drew Gooden? Erick Dampier? Lorenzen Wright? Lorenzen is an upgrade over Blount I think. Memphis should push for that. But something tells me that Perkins should start much like how West is at pg. Maybe he can surprise in big minutes. It seems Al has been having more trouble with his fouls than Perkins has LATELY THOUGH.

Id like to see a future line-up of Banks, Tony Allen, Reed, Jefferson, and Perkins. I think that young team could do real well at all phases of the game with time.

Perkins should definitely get more minutes and those minutes should be taken out of Blount's playing time. Perkins, when he gets positioning, is a very strong rebounder. Its just getting into position which he needs to focus on. He'll be a solid shot blocker, but not a big time force.
I don't konw of anyone who's out there right now who we could acquire without giving up a whole lot. Ben Wallace is in his final year of his contract (according to Hoopshype), but odds are he'll remain a Piston till he retires.
Someone like Mutumbo in his prime, who could rebound 12 boards a game and block 4 shots a game would be a tremendous lift for us defensively and stabilize our interior defense and allow Ricky and Pierce to stay at home on the perimeter.

I think in time Perkins, as you say, will be a strong rebounder and solid, but not spectacular, shot blocker. But I think over time Jefferson can be a force in blocking shots. He just seems to have a good instinct to him and like scoring it will come to him naturally as he gets more playing time. For now, however, it would be nice to get an accomplished shot blocker. Maybe we can get Kiki drunk and trade Blount for Camby. LOL

The future front line I would love to see is Gomes, Jefferson and Perkins; with Greene/West and Green in the backcourt. That would give size and rebounding in all five positions, while maintaining good ball skills.

To get a big man like the old Mutombo, its gonna take Paul Pierce to trade for. Be serious. Lorenzen Wright is as good as its gonna get without trading PP. Philly won't move Dalembert for Pierce. Its so pointless anyways. Why?

That would give size and rebounding in all five positions, while maintaining good ball skills. That is pretty similar to what I'm feeling, but I'm still wondering whether Perkins is going to be impactful enough on defense? I'd place my money on Big Al becoming the better shot blocker. He's so quick off the ground and has a nose for the ball. C- ? PF- Jefferson SF- ? SG- Gerald PG- Orien I truly think that in order for us to be contenders and ultimately reach our goal of having a dynasty, we need a dominating defensive presence--a guy who just devours rebounds anywhere near the rim and blocks a ton of shots. And at small forward, I like to see if we can grab a 6'10" athletic and versatile guy in the mold of Lamar Odom or Charlie Villanueva, who can shoot the three's, run the breaks, rebound, slash to the basket, etc. Maybe getting our hands on Josh Smith from Atlanta is an option. He's an electrifying player who can rebound, block shots, and especially finish plays. Nemanja Alexandrov sounds like this type of player too. BC, have you seen this kid play yet?

If Al becomes a good enough shot blocker and defender, we may not need Perkins to become dominant. After all, the Spurs just one a championship with Nazr Mohammed at center -- hardly dominant. Perkins IMO can be at least as good as he, and frankly better. If Al is a top shot blocker, as well as big time scorer and rebounder, all we will need is a solid, steady contribution from Perkins. I'm thinking 10 rpg, 2-3 bpg on a steady basis.

Great, BC. Let us know about Nemanja as soon as you see him play. This could be the year he comes out in the draft.
Mev, the Perkins/Jefferson combo could be a success if they average at least 20 rebounds and 5 blocked shots a game, combined. Jefferson's quickness and agiliy more than make up for Perkins' lack of those qualities, but Perkins will need to hold his own as well. We can't have any weaknesses in the paint.

I think the summer before last, we had a choice to keep Mihm or Blount. My choice was Mihm because he was more of a banger on the boards while Blount was passive and weak and a lot more expensive. I think Danny dropped the ball on that one.

I was also hoping for Mihm, instead of Blount. Mihm has had some pretty big rebounding games for the Lakers, and Blount has had some big scoring games for us. Neither of them were going to make us wish one for the other.
Here's a scenario for you guys to chew on. **But please note that I am not trying to find ways of trading Pierce. This is not a trade-Pierce-because-he's-a-cancer post.** If you could trade Pierce to grab Greg Oden, would you do it?
The reason why I bring this up is because championship caliber teams have very strong defenses. We do not have a strong defense. We do have a lot of offensive firepower and maybe in order for us to get to that high level, we may need to move our best offensive player in exchange for a dominant interior defender and rebounder. Greg Oden is being hyped up as the next biggest thing to come out of high school since Lebron James. Oden is a Center lot of scouts are claiming to come around only once in a decade. He's not much of an offensive player at this stage (but I hear its developing), but his rebounding and defense are supposedly off the charts. He's got an NBA ready body.
Is it conceivable to think that if we keep Ricky (who's right around a 20 ppg scorer for us right now) and develop both Big Al and Gerald Green (both have potentials to become big scorers), that we'd have enough offense on the team to carry us to a chmapionship? And that with the addition of Greg Oden, who may possibly anchor our interior defense (which is pretty sad right now), along with Big Al (who has a nose for blocking shots and rebounding), and Kendrick Perkins backing them up off the bench, that we'd have a pretty strong rotation of defensive players to give us a championship caliber defensive team?

I know you all are sick of it, but there is no way some team would take Pierce for the #1 over all pick in the 07 draft. But if we had the chace, of course i would. I would trade anyone on this team for him.
