Ok, I'm reading between the lines, and this is what I think Ainge is angling for.
So much talk of the need for a rim protector has led many to think that if Ainge moves into the mid lottery, his target is Willie Cauley-Stein, who is arguably the most versatile rim protector in the draft.
But recently, Brad was interviewed and he stated he wants more versatility and better shooting.
(From NESN's Zack Cox): Head coach Brad Stevens spoke with reporters Tuesday for the first time since the Celtics’ season ended April 23 at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and he was asked what he’d most like to add to his team this summer. After rattling off a string of intangibles — “the work ethic, the everyday approach, the togetherness” — Stevens got down to business. “From a basketball standpoint,” Stevens said, “I just think we need to continue to focus on ability to be a little bit more versatile, which I thought helped us as we got later on in the season with a couple of our changes that we made. And then I think shooting is a big deal. Obviously, everybody’s going to talk about rim protectors and those type of things. There’s only so many of those guys. So, I think those other two areas are really important for us.”
Versatile can mean a player who plays multiple positions -- or it can mean a player who plays a position in a variety of ways. Case in point, Myles Turner. He's 6'11" and is a legitimate Center, but he can shoot from midrange and from the perimeter as well. He can also hustle up and down the court. Maybe not quite Draymond Greene versatile, but much like LaMarcus Aldridge.
And Turner is a defender as well.
And did I mention he can play Center? An area that where we could use an upgrade?
If Ainge trades into the mid lottery area, I feel he's looking at Turner, not Cauley-Stein.
