Despite being 1 - 2, no one should lose their optimism in this team. We have a lot of good and promising things on this team and its obvious to me that we can be a really good team--as soon as we start coming together.
We are already playing with a lot of positive vibes and with a lot of team unity. Every player is hustling and getting on the floor and sacrificing themselves for each other.
Our starting 5 is a solid unit and when they are playing in sync, its a thing of beauty, as all 5 guys can score. Right now, our offense gets out of sync here and there, but its still very early in the season and I have no doubt that the team will begin to get a better feel for the offense and won't struggle as much (especially in the 4th quarter). Once we get consistent for most of the game, look out.
Soon our bench will get a handle on things and start producing more. Big Al had a terrific game vs. Charlotte, coming in off the bench in the 3rd quarter and giving us some inside scoring. Hopefully, he's getting on track. On his very first shot attempt, he litterally was 2 steps ahead of his man (might have been Okafor, but I want to say Ely). He got to his spot in the middle of the paint so quickly that by the time his man caught up with him, Jefferson had already released his right handed baby hook from 7 feet out. On the very next possession, he executed the same move, and even though his defender knew what was coming, he couldn't prevent Jefferson from scoring. Al also had a nice putback slam off a miss shortly thereafter. The amazing thing about it was how quickly he got down the floor to be there for the putback. Its only a matter of time before Jefferson gets a feel for his offense back and becomes a consistent scoring force off the bench.
Perkins had a good game as well, and he was a burden for the Bobcats. Got his body in front of his man a lot, shielding his man on his backside so that he can have the positioning on the rebounds. He and Justin Reed can be our defensive specialists.
Ryan Gomes didn't get much playing time on Saturday night, and the only conclusion I can see is that he isn't producing in practice. Gomes has shown a lot of maturity and smart basketball skills, so there's no doubt that he can play at this level right now. But it may be that he's not producing in practice, and Doc has a habit of playing players who do good in practice.
Orien is playing tentatively, and Dickau looks to have gotten a step closer to getting the 2nd PG spot behind Delonte. We'll see how this develops.
But overall, our second unit has the ability to be remarkably effective because we have scorers and defensive players. Once Tony Allen comes back, he will be a big plus for the team. We are missing some of his acrobatic ability to make things happen out of nothing (like his throw down dunks off of misses, and his slashing ability).
Even though we lost 2 games that we should have won, there are still so many promising aspects in our game that I'd be willing to bet that when we figure out how to be more consistent, we can start pouring in the wins and look like a surefire playoff team.
