I'm not sure who announced the celtics series in 08, but I've been watching a lot of oldschool basetball of late. Johnny Most is calling the celtics series in the finals most years. Just hearing "Havlicek stole the ball!!" gives me goosebumps which never would have happened today. Just something much more personal about it and his excitement.

Back in those days the only guy that called the game was the local radio guy. The NBA had no national broadcasting radio rights, at least not to the point where there were any national announcers. They'd air about 1-3 games of the finals and that was about it. I know that 1970 was the first NBA finals where every game was televised. The rest of the games weren't televised nationally so the only guy calling the game was the radio play by play guy. I know in some markets they'd record the playoff games and air them on a UHF station, but I think those were pretty spotty. It's a shame how little footage exists of the NBA from the 40s through even the 70s. Say what you want about David Stern, but he was on the ball with that. He made every team start recording their games in the early 80s.

I don't know about finals games. Maybe in your local area. I would love it if you could watch the Celts finals games on NESN and hear Tommy screaming. Not sure the NBA would like it

We have that problem with the Iowa Hawkeye games. The national TV crew know nothing about the to teams playing. Only what they are handed in a scouting report. We like our local radio voices. The issue is getting the radio and TV in sync, due to time delays. More often than not the radio crews are better, to me, because they have to cover the game in a way to make you see the action.
