Celtics exercise option on C Perkins October 29, 2005 BOSTON (Ticker) - The Boston Celtics on Saturday exercised their 2006-07 option on center Kendrick Perkins.
The 27th pick of the 2003 draft by the Memphis Grizzlies who immediately was traded to the Celtics, Perkins has averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 70 games over two seasons for Boston.
Perkins, who averaged 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 60 games last season, will earn just over $1.4 million in his option year after receiving $780,400 this season.
We all knew this was coming. Good that we got it taken care of. He now has 2 more years to prove himself if he can be a regular rotation player for us.
Question remains if we are going to exercise Banks' option.

If we don't pick it up now we can pick it up later or sign him later.

Yeah, Banks is still under contract for this year. If we decide to wait until the season is over, he'll become a free agent and we'll have to compete for him if we want to keep him.
Honestly, I think the Banks experiment may finally come to a close after this season.

Even if we did compete for him against other teams we should have the advantage.

Not necessarily. I mean, if Delonte and Orien solidify their roles this year, Banks is looking at being the 3rd PG on the team with only a few minutes of playing time. If he can go elsewhere and be a backup who gets a lot more playing time, he'd probably be enticed by that.

Would you be good with a million bucks riding the bench?

Well, if Dickau can't pull himself out of his lifeless play, I can see Ainge moving him sometime during the season.
I really think Dan Dickau can play better than he has been showing, but he needs to start stepping up. Its not doing us any good if he doesn't play better. Its like this--Orien Greene has already set the bar at a certain height. Its both Delonte's and Dickau's job to raise their games higher than the bar that Orien set. If they do, Orien remains a backup. If they don't, Orien is the starter and we look to move either Dickau or Delonte because they mirror one another. And we know that Doc and Ainge really like Delonte because he plays to win. So if Dickau doesn't get better early in the season, we shouldn't be surprised to see him gone.

Good move. You have to wonder if we had more bigs, would Perks be resigned immediately?
W/ Banks, I am wondering if the staff is unhappy w/ the fact he was a 4-year college player, vs. a high school player?

I think wed still resign Perk, for two reasons: 1) Hes got unreal rebouding potential, which is short supply on this team, and B) Hes option year only pays him a little over league minimum anyways.

Exactly. He's a low cost rebounding option for us. This move is a no brainer. Now if Perkins asks for big bucks once he's entitled for contract negotiations, we really need to weigh cost vs. production.
Soon, Ainge is going to have to deal with this on a yearly basis. Next year, it'll be Jefferson, Delonte, Allen, and Reed. The year after that, it'll be Green, Gomes, and Greene. And imagine the headache he will have to go through as he deals with their agents when they're entitled to big money. Big Al is not going to come cheaply if he starts developing his vast potential. And neither will Gerald Green. Then there comes Pierce's contract extension and then Ricky's.

Derren, great point. Though, I am thinking 1-2 players will only receive the max, like AJ, or Green. I think Danny will have some wiggle room, because half the players mentioned were 2nd round selections.

I get the feeling that Delonte is going to an easy sign. First of all, he's not going to put up big stats and secondly, he seems like a loyal guy who'll stay even if he gets less. I'm not so sure about Tony. Big Al seems like a loyal kid. Actually, most of our young players seem like loyal kids.
Now, in order to keep everyone and not be over the 100 million dollar mark, guys like Pierce and Ricky are going to have to come at a hometown discount.

Its not really the players, its the agents that play hardball. Not sure on the latter players mentioned.

And extending perk for a year is the easiest decision danny has had to make yet.
