fivethirtyeight.com/features/when-to-sign-an-nba-player-to-the-max/Choosing whether or not to give a player max dollars is a huge decision for a franchise. If he's not worth it, you have saddled yourself with a contract that hinders you from making big moves in free agency. The other side of this is letter a quality player go for either no reimbursement via free agency, or giving them up on a pennies on the dollar trade.

So what do u do with rondo if Kevin love isn't coming here? Do u wait and hope that rondo does a sign and trade? In the mean time, we might miss out on another top ten pick we could get now. Or maybe rondo says to another team, don't trade for me cause I'll just go there after the season and the team can keep its assets instead of trading us anything good.

If we lose Rondo it's not the end of the world at all. It's 13mill off the books and he's going to be 29 by that time I think. We would be a naturally bad team with another very high pick. If he stays he's probably here till he's 34 or so, which isn't that old in NBA terms. It's the end of the top notch rope, and by that time you have to pray he's no longer the best or 2nd best player on the team, but that's the way it's supposed to go.
The Celts can only lose in the following ways....give out bad contracts, make bad trades, draft bad players. But Ainge is pretty decent on all three fronts. He has tons to play with here. I'm not worried at all.

It doesn't really take into account other realistic scenarios. Like what is the thing that happens if they don't sign Kyrie and he leaves? Then what? Where do you get another Kyrie to replace Kyrie? Also it doesn't take into account trades. You have to have appealing players to trade for one. I also think it's a little odd in the sense that basically young all star type guys get big deals. If you never sign one then you will never have an all star. If you never have one you will never win. It does back up part of my theory that draft picks are a little like cars....they lose a lot of value as soon as you drive them off the lot. They rarely increase in value. Sully and KO both increased.

Good read. The jist of the article was if the player is not a top 15 (aka all-NBA) player, then he is not worth the max contract.
