www.nba.com/celtics/roster/2005DepthChart-PG.htmlWith training camp underway and the regular season approaching, join Celtics.com as we wrap up the Depth Chart series for the third season. We’ve saved the biggest preseason battle for last, as we take a look at point guard. This is by far the toughest position to gauge with Dan Dickau and Delonte West fighting for the starting nod, while Orien Greene and Will Bynum are looking to take advantage of the hole left by the Marcus Banks injury. Doc Rivers does not have an easy decision ahead of him, as it should be a dog fight throughout the preseason

When in dount give it to the worst/youngest player on paper and let the others beat him out. If say Dickau can't clearly establish himself as better than say Bynum, why should he even get PT?

None of our PG's are championship caliber, IMO. Unless you have great players playing in a great system, its hard winning without a really good PG.
The Bulls didn't have a really good PG (BJ Armstrong and Ron Harper), but they won because of Jordan and Pippen.
The Rockets with Olajuwon, didn't have a really good PG (Kenny Smith and Sam Cassel), but they had Hakeem and they ran a system which played to his strengths.
Dennis Johnson was a good PG, but he played with 3 great players.
The Pistons didn't have great players on the team in the late 80's, aside from Isaiah Thomas--their only great player--but they had a team full of good role players who executed very well.
We have star players on the team right now (Pierce and Ricky), and we have potential star players coming up (Jefferson and Gerald Green). We also have developing role players (Gomes, Perkins, Reed, Allen). All 4 players need to step up and be star players in order for us to win without a really good PG.
Or we'll need to develop a great system, something we don't have at this time.

I've been saying Buckets can be a nice PG option, in a running game, for the last year. Take a look in the archives. He is servicable as long as we have other solid ball handlers on the court. Hell, PP is a point-forward, as long as he's moving. Reaf, Reed and Gomes take stress off the PG as well, with good hands and passing.

I don't know about Doc, but personally I would rather see Ricky getting the ball, then distributing it. Especially with Toine and Payton gone, we need to find that extra scoring. Raef will provide some, and so will Big Al, but Ricky is our second best scorer after Pierce.
To me Dickau needs to step up BIG TIME. I still do not think that he has fully meshed yet with the team. It is still early. Delonte actually impressed me with the one preseason game that I did see. But I think Dickau is the one who has to step it up and become the starter. I really think Ainge and Doc expect him to lead this team and be a serviceable point guard. (So do I) Hopefully, he just needs more time. I think by the start of the season he will start to play better and rack up some nice assists, and be the regular starting point guard.

Not a bad thing, even if DD and DW pick it up.

I don't mind Ricky playing point less than 5 or 6 minutes a game, just to give the other guys a rest, but we need him to SCORE and play great D, primarily. Like I said I'd rather have him get the ball then have to distribute it.

Agreed. I'd rather Ricky concentrate on scoring the ball off of screens and picks and curls, rather than him looking to pass the ball up. He's not a PG and I think it'll be a mistake to use him in that role. This is not to say that he's not a good passer. I just feel that he shouldn't have to differ shots because he's playing the PG position.
I too feel that Dickau hasn't found his role yet. He's trying to get a feel for this team and isn't quite meshing yet. It takes some time to get used to your teammates and for your teammates to get used to you.

Set-up Blount in the High Post and let him find cutters off screens to the Basket, sheesh.

Set-up Blount in the High Post and let him find cutters off screens to the Basket, sheesh. I don't get the impression that Blount has good court vision. He's also been turnover prone, so the only time I want him to have the ball is when he's open for a shot.

Maybe a nice pass banked off of Blounts hands to the open man could work. Just don't let Mark try to catch it as it bounces off his mittens. ;D
