If the season were to start today, I'd think that our bench would have more of an impact than our starting 5. We don't know who our SG is going to be (if Tony Allen was healthy, he'd probably be the starter). And if Jefferson starts, we shouldn't expect him to be a big time player yet. And whoever wins the PG battle will be our new starting PG, since Payton is now playing for the Heat.
But off the bench, we have guys who can be impactful on offense and defense. Ricky Davis is one of the league's premier scorers off the bench and Marcus Banks can be instant offense too when his shot is on. Ryan Gomes may not get a lot of minutes initially, but his ability to score and rebound will be a nice addition. Defensively, we have an emerging defensive presence in Perkins, who can block shots and rebound, and Justin Reed is an in-your-face defender who can guard physical wing players. Marcus Banks is one of the league's best defensive PG's and Ricky is also a disruptor defensively.
If for any reason our starters are taking long getting the motor running, Doc can opt to bring in the bench, who can provide instant scoring and a lot of pestering defense. Its like a hoard of angry bees coming at you in waves.

A lot like last season at times... Mostly due to Buckets IMO.

This topic needs more input, imo. Derren has a nice point about our bench. We need our bench to come through again this season. We need that energy/spark, to put team down, when they start to lose a step. Depth is so key with a young team. You know we won't get the calls from the refs, so we need the kids to be solid.

Our bench was key to the team's success (some) last season. Several games, the starters came out lackluster, and the bench was able to spark them. One nice aspect to our bench is that w/ the exception of Davis, no one player is the focal point of the offense.

Ricky is indeed the focus of the bench. I expect Banks to have more 18 pt games this year than last also. Jefferson will be more sharper. I expect West to average 10-11ppg and 4apg or so if he starts all year. Dickau can get those numbers easier seeing he has been in the league longer.

I see more of a combination from the PG. 8-10 points averaged and 4-5 ast averaged.
Mid-season will tell us more, once PP has been moved. Maybe Banks and/or Allen too.

A team is only as good as its bench. A strong 10 man rotation would be awesome, and we certainly seem to be have enough talent to be more than 10 deep (not this year, mind you). Bench depth is great, but a team also needs some big time players coming through night in and night out. Right now we have Pierce and Ricky. Down the line, we have Jefferson and Green.

Yea, there aren't any proven scorers at all right now. Even Raef has on and off games too often to be a scorer like Pierce or Ricky.

Here's another part of our bench that is exciting. We all know how solid our starting 5 is on the offensive end, but the second unit has a lot of defensive players who can come in and change the tempo of the game from a defensive standpoint.
Doc can call on Ricky Davis, Marcus Banks, Kendrick Perkins, and Justin Reed at any point in the game, whether it be early in the first quarter if things are getting out of hand from the get-go, near the end of the half to keep the score close heading into halftime, or during the 4th quarter if we need defensive stops or a quick burst of points coming off of turnovers. Those 4 players are our best defenders and Ricky, Banks, and Reed pester their men really good. The type of defense they play can result in lots of turnovers, or get teams tp take shots deeper into the 24 second window.
Its important to have a defensive second unit because when the starters are resting, its very important to hold down opponents and keep them from recovering.

I think it will be interesting to see how the bench develops there are so many young players there that are already racking up mintues in the L. From here their ceiling is unlimited, I know most think Banks' time is over, but even having a player that can come in at the PG position and play hustle defense is an important mix off the bench solely for 1 or two plays he has to make defensively even if its 1 game a month he makes a key steal, it could be the difference. You have a guy like Blount at the center, who while mostly worthless is still capable of stretching the defenses with his 18 footer. Which with all the speed in our backcourt, it will help get guys inside and give Ricky open looks. I think we have seen last year how our second unit could come in during games when the first 5 were flat and scrape us back into games, with a year together and much better talent and hustle they really could be used to completely change the flow of a game midstream. We will only go as far as our second unit takes us, our first 5 is solid, but not top of the east caliber but with a solid 12 man performance every night we can take the Atlantic.

if the 2nd unit keeps outscoring everyone and playing tough defense, you have to ask yourself how long it can be before 2nd unit is 1rst unit. Not too long I think. one or 2 of them are there now

I was surprised b y the nice words about Borchardt.

No, Ferbo, only 14 players are allowed to be on the active list. If we have a 15th player, someone will have to be on the inactive list.
This team should be able to lead the league in steals. We have so many athletic players who are quick and long armed to get steals on a consistent basis. Steals lead to a lot of fast breaks and that's what we are trying to accomplish.

I think Doc is going to use a combination of West and Banks off the bench and Dickau will be the starter. Im liking our pgs and depth all around.
