Can Perkins move ahead of Raef and be our opening day starter at C?
For many, its a foregone conclusion that Raef will be the starter opposite of Jefferson. But maybe its not etched in stone yet. During training camp, Perkins may come in vastly improved and he could turn Rivers head, to the point where he might feel the urge to put Perk in with the starting 5.
It may be a mistake putting 2 really young players in the starting rotation. But we have 2 guys who can come in and relieve them if they get in trouble (Raef and Scalabrine).

that would be excellent but i still think that perkins needs one or two more seasons to become full- time starter

I really can't see Perkins opening the season as the starting center with everyone healthy (knock on wood), but who knows?
I see it more as:
Starting C - Raef Backup C - Perk Starting PF - AL Backup PF - Veal
Doc could even start Perk at center and Raef at the 4, with Big Al coming off the bench, but I think the former has more chance of happening. Big AL has a better chance of starting than Perk, then again it is what they are looking for out of the starters at that position, and what they are looking for off the bench.
I.e. More rebounding from the first unit, better scoring from the bench (doubt that will be a problem), high-energy from the bench (Veal) etc.

I still think Perkins is better suited off the bench. He's a nice player, but not a clear cut starter.
Raef is a hard working Center who gives it a good effort every night. But I think Perkins can pull ahead of him if he's rebounding really well. Even if Perkins isn't scoring much, if he impresses Rivers with his rebounding, Doc may just put him in the lineup to see how that works.

If they let Perk play for 25 mins a night for 12 nites in a row and start half those ganþmes, we'd all know by now, wouldn't we? But for some reason they insisted last season on giving a lot more minutes to a bad knee over the hill stiff, and Blount. I'd rather start the guy I occassionally mistake for Shaq until he gives me a reason not to

;D Way to boost Perk's ego by saying he looks like Shaq.
Perkins seemed like he could have played more minutes last year. But Rivers ultimately held him back, for some reason.

Not all of Doc's "reasons" make sense to me and that was one of the biggest for me last year

Perk's in ability to stay out of foul trouble was one of his biggst drawbacks last year. He's gotta fix that if he wants to be the starting C. And Im not so sure that Al is gonna be the starting 4, at least right away. He's gonna have to make big strides on D if he wants to see 30+ minutes a night.

Perk's in ability to stay out of foul trouble was one of his biggst drawbacks last year. Right on the money Fresh... That has been my main concern about Perk from the start and Big Al for that matter. This tends to be the main problem with most young bigs, at any level of basketball, HS to NBA.

More importantly, he needs to stay out of HARD foul trouble. If he wasn't on my team, I would think he was a total !!!GREENIAC!!!. Some of those fouls were ridiculous...and unless we move him, I think Blonut will be getting a lot more minutes than people like. Keeping him out of the line up in the playoffs sure didn't do too much. And now we have friggin Veal instead of Toine. I know you all think that Scalabrine will be better than Googs, and it's hard to dispute that, but seeing how guys like McKie and D. Anderson got half as much as he did, I still think we got ripped off. He's just another big body, and will be more like Greg Kite than anyone else......hey, anyone is allowed their opinion.

I think it will take 1 more year to be a starter for Perkins if Perkins proves himself in bigger minutes off the bench this year. For some reason though, I am thinking that Doc will go with Blonut at the beginning again though picking up where he left off before the AW trade. Lets hope this doesn't happen. But, expect the unexpected also. I don't believe Blonut is eligible to be dealt right now either so who knows. Raef now, is there any way for the celtics to still use the amnesty clause on him? After all, they eliminated Bakers contract but Baker was nopt on our roster. Maybe they can do Raef too. Not sure.

The only way Blount starts this season is if he comes to camp with a total 180 degree change of heart, attitude, and style of play. If he's willing to do anything and everything for the team and for Doc, and if he's attacking the boards hard, he has a chance to start. But I just don't see it happening.
I think part of Perkins foul trouble stemmed from his attitude to over exaggerate his 'enforcer' role. He wanted to play the part real bad because that's what Doc wanted out of him, but he went too far at times.

Yea like getting ejected in Chicago and in the final minute, getting ejected during game 7 of the indy series. I think he can tone it down a bit and be an enforcer just the way hes needed to be without any extremes.

Right you are, Meltin. Perkins can tone it down and be even more effective. He just needs to anticipate where to be a step sooner and not jump at every ball fake.
