Ok, lets make a similar thread, this time using Doc Rivers.
What would you do if you were Doc Rivers? How would you run the team? How would you split the minutes up? Who would you play more of? Who would you play less?

Starters
5- Reaf 4- Big Al 3- Reed 2- PP 1- West
Bench
Buckets Perkins Allen or Gomes (one when we go small and one for the big line up) Banks (w/ an eye on Greene for the second half) Scalabrine or MBlount (depends on the need for a 4 or 5)
Green (give him slop minutes to start out)
Just a shot in the dark until we get to see them play. I like the looks of this unit. The players we have give us a lot of different options and potential rotations.
If 2 or 3 of these guys - Allen, Reed, Gomes and Green play well enough to demand (earn) minutes, a trade will be needed. With PP and RD set players in the rotation there will be a log-jam at the 2 and/or 3. All yet to be seen though.

If I'm Doc, I'm going to make sure development of the young guys is my main objective. I'd start Raef, but bring in Perkins early and let him play in tight spots. I'd use a lot of substitutions and require the players to give it their all when they are in the game--if not, they'll sit.
I'd start:
Raef Jefferson Pierce Allen Delonte
Main Bench:
Perkins Scalabrine Gomes Ricky Banks
Secondary Bench players
Justin Reed Gerald Green Orien Greene Blount

Your secondary bench hurts me. Reed, Brother... He can play the big 3 or the small 4 (when we try to run them out of the court). Lock-down D, on a 2, 3 or 4. He might have that type of D on a 5. He's gotta be in the main rotation (top 7- 9)... I see him starting and ending games. Jump on board Derren. You'll see.

I think Justin Reed could have been in the first substitution, but Ryan Gomes will push him to the secondary bench. They are both deserving of minutes, but placed side by side, Gomes will probably get the upper hand. The game seems to come easier for him. But if its defense that Rivers specifically needs, Justin will be the guy he calls on.

Maybe a big/fast line up... 5- Al 4- Reed 3- Gomes 2- PP, Allen or GGreen 1- West or OGreene ?

That's the great thing about the young guys we have. We can play big and small. We have so many interchangeable parts who can play multiple positions that it allows Doc the luxury of being able to matchup with virtually any team (granted, not against the powerhouses like the Spurs).
Big Al can play Center if we go small, but as a PF, he's one of the quickest ones around.
Gomes and Reed are in between PF and SF, as they have enough size to play PF (against a small lineup) and they have enough versatility to play SF (against big lineups). Gomes has the game to be an inside/outside threat, while Reed has the defensive ability to guard both SF's and PF's.
Tony Allen is only 6'4", but he's been asked to guard SF's last year as a rookie. He's got a wiry strong body and long arms, which allow him to be enough of a defensive pest against guys who are sometimes 4" taller than he.
Delonte West is a two-way backcourt player, capable of being the PG or the SG. At 6'3", he's a good sized PG, but if we go small, he can slide to SG.

I like DM's rotation, except I may flip-flop Reed and Gomes. Doc will probably have a greater comfort level having coached Reed for a year, and the stories of Reed "locking down" Paul Pierce during practice will probably give Reed the edge over Gomes this year.
I would give my young bigs every opportunity to play big minutes, and go stretches with them together to see how it works. It worked really well in a late-season game vs Philly last year where we were down 20+ in the 1st quarter, but then Jefferson and Perk came in and turned the tide of the game by being very aggressive in the paint. My ideal would be to have those two start, with Raef being the 4/5 off the bench, but more realistically Raef will probably start at 5 with Perk backing him up.
If we fell behind and needed defensive pressure, I would put Allen at 2 and Reed at 3 with Banks at the 1. The kind of pressure they can put on the ball could be scary.
And of course, I would add mev17 as my highest-paid assistant.

You are not alone. C17 has been trying to convince me of Justin Reed's value. But I'm sticking with Ryan Gomes as my backup PF/SF. He's got a sturdy body to bang around with, and though he may not be as much of a defensive presence on the court as Justin Reed is capable of being, Gomes offense, his rebounding ability, and his basketball sense will prove me right ;D
Ryan Gomes' defensive limitations will not stick out as much as Reed's offensive limitations.

1. I would stress defense over offense. The two top defensive teams were in the finals. That doesn't mean I would take Reed over Gomes but I would bench anyone who didn't D up. I would not have a set roster. I would make each roster accodring to the other team's problems and then force them to adapt to my game. That is called coaching or it was at one time.
2. I would make Blount's life hell so deep on the pine or running team errands so much he would waive his trade clause kicker on his contract.
3. Make us run and run hard. Our strength is our young legs.
4. Make the team play as a team. Young minds are impressionable. Good habits need to be instilled now. Move the ball, pass and pick away. Take what is there and not force all the action through one or two players.

C4ever, Thats a good way to look at it. Blonut should be carrying bags if he isn't gonna put his heart into it.

The way I see it, Gomes isn't a defensive liability anyhow. He's probably a sound defender--just not as good as Reed seems to be. But as a rebounder (which I consider part of defense), he may have the upperhand.

Well, I'm not so sure that Delonte is our future PG too. It all depends on how good the team is at moving the ball around. Some teams need to have a guy creating plays for everyone. If we end up like this, we'll need a better playmaking PG than Banks. But if its the Kings we are trying to emulate, then Delonte may be all we need.
But I'm not counting out Orien Greene either. Ainge gave him a three year contract before he ever stepped foot on a basketball court (not even 1 single summer league game). He obviously has a lot of interest in this guy, and I ain't about to lose my faith in Ainge's talent assessing now.
