Back in the old days Pierce used his speed in defense (not a wonder he ties the Celtics record for steals in a game) & to get himself open for the jumper in offense. Since he bulcked up, his blocking avg. has declined plus he can't open himself as much for the jumper, depending to much on his drive. He's not as electrifying anymore as in 2001-2002.

Celtics need to be better at going full-tilt for 48 mins a game. Thats the reason why they aren't a good rebounding team and lackluster on defense. Its all about effort when it comes to those aspects in basketball.

Yeah, effort is also a culprit. But I wonder how much of our lack of execution was due to lack of talent than it was effort? I mean neither Raef and Blount were effective down the stretch.

This is one of the reasons Paul Pierce needs to be traded.

I think we need experience too or rather our players to get some experience. Looking at the lads we are a young and athletic team. Talentwise we stack up nicely these days. Effort is a huge compensator. Larry certainly was as talented in terms of running and jumping as many back in the day but his effort was ungodly in its intensity.
I just want to see some hardnose ball again! I think we should be improved and happy days are ahead in a year or two if we play our cards right and develop the lads and the leprchaun keeps blessing us with good drafts.

I want to see a team like the pistons with this new celtic team. Hardnosed bluecollar like team. Lesser salaries meaning a team game. All of that. This also depends on Perkins developing also and Jefferson. If lets say our team manages to trade a bunch to get Oden like Allen, Perkins or whoever else not naming Jefferson or Green, this team could be the next SA spurs. It would be nice to have a can't miss center like a young David Robinson.

The good news is that most of the new guys seem to have hard working attitudes. Not one of them seems like a loafer. And most of them have defensive capabilities.
Crazy thing is, even if we don't pull off a big trade, if we stick with our 9 young pups and develop them the best we can, we are going to have one heck of a talented team--just with the players we've acquired in the past 3 drafts. That's just unheard of. But then again, not all of them will live up to their potential. Its called the law of averages.

yeah i'm afraid of it too. i think danny and doc have to figure out who will pan out in the long run and who are question marks. we can trade the ones they don't see fit in the long run because they have value now. ainge does have a reputation of finding gems in the draft. he should capitalize on it and use some youngsters in trades.
jefferson perkins green allen gomes
are the ones i definitely want to stay put

The problem of that is we'd have to do the trade during the season, and hope that we end up with the #1, because if this kid is the real deal, no team in their right mind would trade the pick regardless of what we offer. And if we trade them a lot of talent for the pick, That makes the chances of them being horrific that much worse. If we want to go that route, Id rather just trade pierce and walker for draft picks and prospects. If we didnt sign any FAs between now and then, we'd be a pretty poor team.

Firstly, I think that the biggest problem the team have is(are).....too many "head"cases! Paul thinks he the "best thing" that ever happened to the Celtics - since he recovered from the stabbing incident. Then Blount thinks he is more sophisticated than the other guys. Once they all realize that Basketball is a team sport (everyone is important) and that everyone has to buy into the team "Vision", then we will all experience the rewards. I am completely blown away by the maturity and success of Ricky, this past season ! I also think that Marcus will surprise EVERYONE ..... he will be outstanding this coming season (mainly because I think he learned his lessons well..from Gary) - that will be the factor. Thanks Gary ! The other young guys, especially Tony, will show their maturity and savvy ! We will do well with a young team. It all have to do with mentality! Now, we need Paul and Blount to "GET IT" !

Further to my earlier post, I would like to point out that we need to utilize the "running"game. Considering the fact that we have a lot of "ÿoung guns"who are very athletic and energetic. Paul, needs to decide that he can trust his team mates and forget about that ISO play - he is not as quick anymore. As soon as the double presents itself - pass the doggone ball ! A motion offense is what would most effective on the half court set - run those defenders tired (see RIP). Play defence, especially Blount, with PRIDE, Celtic pride ! On paper, as far as talent, this team scares me, as to what they can do....I can't wait to see "Doc" light the fire and see the boys burn !!

Now, we need Paul and Blonut to "GET IT" ! I agree! They'll have until trade deadline to prove it. IMO I hope you're right about Banks. I just hope Payton's attitude didn't rub-off on him.

"I hope you're right about Banks. I just hope Payton's attitude didn't rub-off on him"
I have been following these threads since the draft last year.....I have read so, so many messages and opinions. And one thing that I believe that I gathered from everything I read about Payton ...is that he is a professional ! Since he came to Boston, I sense that he took an immediate "liking" to Banks....Kinda "felt it" for him and what he was going through (all the struggles and expectations). So, he took him under his wings to encourage, mentor and teach Banks. It seems that the legacy he wants to leave, is that one day he can look back and say that he was responsible for rescuing the young talent. I believe he has ensured that only the good stuff "rubbed off" on Banks. I think, that is what we will see.....

If he does break out this year, it will take one huge question mark off the team.

The first thing this team has to improve on is defense. they blew a lot of leads last year, especiaslly early in the year. This team wants to become a running team, and to run you need stops. So defense should be the team's first concern.
The next thing they need is development from the younger players. As Al, Perk, Tony and co. continue to develop, they will have more to offer and make a bigger impact on games. Now granted we have no way of knowing how long it will be before they "break-out", but i wouild expect tony to have a big year as early as this year. While green and Al are still a couple of years off from being "stars", their development can help add to this team this year.
Lastly, they need paul to let the offense come to him, and they need for him to come up in big moments. He needs to continue to be the Paul pierce that can take over the game at any moment, but at the same time they need him to not force the issue. He needs to minimize bad shots, and i'd even like to see him run the floor a little bit.
Other than that the team just needs to continue to develop and create a team chemistry. They need to trust each other and share the ball on offense, as well as be there for each other on defense. This is a young team, and the more experience they get playing in the NBA, and playing with each other, the better they will perforom. And better performance means more wins.
